- Place an empty bobbin onto the bobbin winder spindle.
- Wrap the thread around the bobbin a few times clockwise.

3. Threading the Machine
Proper threading is crucial for good stitch quality.
- Raise the presser foot and the needle to its highest position using the handwheel.
- Place a spool of thread on a vertical spool pin.
- Guide the thread through the upper thread guides and tension discs.
- Bring the thread down and around the take-up lever, then down to the needle.
- Use the automatic needle threader or manually thread the needle from front to back.
- Insert the wound bobbin into the bobbin case and then into the bobbin compartment.
- Pull the bobbin thread up through the needle plate opening by turning the handwheel to lower and raise the needle once.
4. Changing Presser Feet
The Elna eXplore 240 uses clip-on presser feet for easy changes.
- Raise the needle and presser foot.
- Press the black lever at the back of the presser foot holder to release the current foot.
- Position the new presser foot so its pin aligns with the groove on the presser foot holder.
- Lower the presser foot holder until it clips onto the new foot.
Operating Instructions
1. Stitch Selection
The Elna eXplore 240 offers 24 stitches, conveniently displayed on the front of the machine.

Figure 3: The stitch selection chart, indicating 24 different stitch patterns.
Turn the stitch selection dial to choose your desired stitch. Refer to the stitch chart on the machine for visual guidance.
2. Adjusting Stitch Length and Width
- Stitch Length: Adjust the stitch length dial from 0-4 mm to control the density of your stitches. Shorter lengths create denser stitches, while longer lengths create looser stitches.
- Stitch Width: Adjust the stitch width dial from 0-5 mm, primarily for zigzag and decorative stitches, to control the width of the stitch.
3. Basic Sewing
Place your fabric under the presser foot. Lower the presser foot lever. Gently press the foot controller to begin sewing. Guide the fabric smoothly without pulling or pushing.
4. 1-Step Buttonhole
The machine features a convenient 1-step buttonhole function.

Figure 4: The 1-step buttonhole foot, designed for automated buttonhole creation.
- Attach the 1-step buttonhole foot.
- Place the button you intend to use into the buttonhole foot's holder.
- Select the buttonhole stitch on the stitch selection dial.
- Lower the buttonhole lever.
- Begin sewing. The machine will automatically sew the buttonhole to the correct size.
5. Drop Feed Dog
To engage the drop feed dog for free-motion sewing or darning, locate the lever on the back or side of the machine and move it to the "drop" position. This disengages the feed dogs, allowing you to move the fabric freely.
6. Twin Needle Sewing
The Elna eXplore 240 supports twin needle sewing for decorative stitches or parallel lines. Use two spools of thread and a twin needle. Ensure the stitch width is set appropriately to prevent the needle from hitting the presser foot.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your sewing machine.
- Cleaning: Regularly clean the bobbin area and feed dogs using a small brush to remove lint and thread scraps. Always unplug the machine before cleaning.
- Needle Replacement: Replace needles frequently, especially after 8-10 hours of sewing or if they become bent or dull. Use the correct needle type for your fabric.
- Storage: When not in use, cover the machine to protect it from dust.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Skipped Stitches | Incorrect needle, bent needle, improper threading. | Change needle, re-thread machine, ensure bobbin is correctly inserted. |
| Thread Breaking | Incorrect tension, poor quality thread, needle too small. | Adjust tension, use good quality thread, use appropriate needle size. |
| Fabric Not Feeding | Feed dogs lowered, presser foot not lowered. | Raise feed dogs, lower presser foot. |
| Machine Not Starting | Power cord not connected, foot controller not connected, power switch off. | Check all connections, turn on power switch. |
