4. Setup

  1. Connect Power: Connect the provided 230V power supply to the "Power Jack" port on the back of the cloner and then plug it into a wall outlet.
  2. Insert Hard Drives:
    • Gently slide your 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SATA hard drives (HDD) or solid-state drives (SSD) into the designated SATA slots on top of the cloner. Ensure they are firmly seated.
    • The cloner supports two drives simultaneously. Slot A is typically for the source drive (when cloning) or the first drive, and Slot B for the target drive (when cloning) or the second drive.
  3. Connect to PC (Optional): If you intend to use the cloner as an external docking station, connect the supplied USB 3.0 cable from the "USB 3.0 B female" port on the cloner to an available USB 3.0 port on your computer.
  4. Power On: Press the power button on the cloner. The power indicator LED should illuminate.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1. PC Connection Mode (Docking Station)

When connected to a PC via the USB 3.0 cable, the Sandberg Hard Disk Cloner functions as an external docking station, allowing you to access the inserted hard drives directly from your computer.

  1. Ensure the cloner is powered on and connected to your PC via the USB 3.0 cable.
  2. Insert one or two SATA hard drives into the slots.
  3. Your operating system should automatically detect the drives. They will appear as removable storage devices.
  4. You can now read, write, and manage files on the drives as you would with any other external storage device.

5.2. Standalone Cloning Mode (PC-Free)

This mode allows you to duplicate the contents of a source hard drive to a target hard drive without needing a computer connection.

Important Note: The target hard disk must have a greater or equal capacity than the source hard disk for the cloning process to succeed. All data on the target drive will be overwritten.

  1. Prepare Drives: Ensure both the source and target hard drives are free of errors and properly formatted.
  2. Insert Drives:
    • Insert the source drive into Slot A.
    • Insert the target drive into Slot B.
  3. Disconnect from PC: Ensure the USB cable is disconnected from the cloner if it was previously connected to a computer. The cloner must operate in standalone mode for cloning.
  4. Power On: Turn on the cloner.
  5. Initiate Cloning: Press and hold the "Clone" button (or similar designated button) for several seconds until the cloning progress LEDs begin to flash.
  6. Monitor Progress: The progress LEDs will indicate the cloning status (e.g., 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%). Do not interrupt the process.
  7. Completion: Once all progress LEDs are solid, the cloning process is complete.
  8. Power Off and Remove: Power off the cloner before safely removing the hard drives.

6. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the device. Avoid using liquid cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the cloner in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures when not in use.
  • Handling: Handle hard drives and the cloner with care to prevent physical damage. Avoid dropping or subjecting the device to strong impacts.
  • Ventilation: Ensure the device has adequate ventilation during operation to prevent overheating.

7. Troubleshooting

  • Device not powering on:
    • Check if the power adapter is securely connected to both the cloner and a working wall outlet.
    • Ensure the power button on the cloner is pressed.
  • Hard drives not detected by PC:
    • Verify the USB 3.0 cable is securely connected to both the cloner and your PC. Try a different USB port on your PC.
    • Ensure the hard drives are properly seated in the cloner's slots.
    • Check Disk Management (Windows) or Disk Utility (macOS) to see if the drives are recognized but uninitialized or unformatted.
    • Test with a different hard drive to rule out a drive issue.
  • Cloning process fails or does not start:
    • Ensure the cloner is disconnected from the PC (standalone mode required for cloning).
    • Confirm that the target drive's capacity is equal to or greater than the source drive's capacity.
    • Verify that the source drive is in Slot A and the target drive is in Slot B.
    • Press and hold the clone button for the required duration (typically several seconds).
    • Check for any errors on the source or target drives using disk diagnostic tools on a PC.
  • Slow data transfer speeds:
    • Ensure you are connected to a USB 3.0 port on your computer. USB 2.0 ports will result in slower speeds.
    • The actual speed can be limited by the speed of the hard drive itself.
