1. Product Overview
The Brinly 40-inch Tow Behind Spike Aerator is designed to address minor to moderate soil compaction in lawns. It creates small holes in the soil, allowing water, air, and nutrients to reach the grass root system more effectively. This process promotes a healthier, greener lawn, especially when performed prior to seeding or fertilizing in the spring and fall. The unit is intended for use with a lawn tractor or ATV.
2. Safety Information
- Always read and understand the entire instruction manual before assembly or operation.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including sturdy footwear and gloves.
- Ensure all fasteners are securely tightened before each use.
- Keep children and pets away from the aerator during operation.
- Do not operate the aerator on slopes that are too steep for safe tractor operation.
- Avoid operating near obstacles, utility lines, or areas with hidden hazards.
- Always disconnect the aerator from the towing vehicle before performing any maintenance or adjustments.
3. Assembly
The Brinly SA-40BH Spike Aerator requires some assembly. Refer to the included assembly guide for detailed, step-by-step instructions and diagrams. Ensure all components are present and correctly installed before proceeding to operation. Basic hand tools are typically required for assembly.

4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Attaching to Towing Vehicle
Connect the aerator's tow bar to the hitch plate of your lawn tractor or ATV using the provided hitch pin. Ensure the connection is secure and allows for proper articulation during turns.
4.2 Adding Weight for Penetration
For effective aeration, especially in compacted soil, it is recommended to add weight to the aerator's tray. Standard concrete blocks can be placed on the tray. The aerator is designed to hold up to 110 lbs (approximately two standard concrete blocks) for maximum spike penetration. Secure the blocks to prevent shifting during operation.

4.3 Aeration Process
Operate the towing vehicle at a slow, consistent speed across the lawn. Overlap passes slightly to ensure complete coverage. For best results, aerate when the soil is moist but not waterlogged. Avoid aerating extremely dry or hard soil, as this can reduce effectiveness and potentially damage the unit. The spikes are designed to penetrate dense soil over 2 inches deep.

5. Maintenance
- Cleaning: After each use, remove any accumulated grass, debris, or soil from the spikes and frame. Hosing off the unit is typically sufficient.
- Inspection: Regularly inspect the spikes for wear or damage. The galvanized steel construction helps inhibit rust, but proper cleaning and storage are essential for longevity. Check all bolts and nuts for tightness and re-tighten as necessary.
- Storage: Store the aerator in a dry, covered area to protect it from the elements when not in use.

6. Troubleshooting
- Poor Penetration:
- Ensure sufficient weight is added to the tray (up to 110 lbs recommended).
- Check soil moisture; aerate when soil is moist, not dry and hard.
- Inspect spikes for excessive wear or damage.
- Spikes Not Rotating/Clogging:
- Clear any debris (leaves, sticks, grass clumps) from between the spikes.
- Ensure the lawn is free of excessive surface debris before aeration.
- Unit Bending/Damage:
- Avoid overloading the weight tray beyond the recommended capacity.
- Ensure the unit is not used on excessively rocky or uneven terrain that could cause undue stress.
