ExpertPower® 7.2V 1650mAh NiMH Battery

Instruction Manual

1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective use of your ExpertPower® 7.2V 1650mAh NiMH Battery. This battery is designed as a replacement or spare for various Icom radio models, including BP-209, BP-210, BP-222, IC-F40GT/S, IC-F12, IC-F21, and IC-F22. Please read this manual thoroughly before initial use.

2. Safety Information

Always observe the following safety precautions to prevent injury or damage to the battery and connected devices:

  • Do not short-circuit the battery terminals.
  • Do not expose the battery to extreme temperatures (above 60°C/140°F or below -20°C/-4°F), direct sunlight, or fire.
  • Do not disassemble, puncture, or modify the battery.
  • Use only chargers specifically designed for NiMH batteries and compatible with the battery's voltage and capacity.
  • Keep the battery away from water and moisture.
  • If the battery shows signs of damage, swelling, or leakage, discontinue use immediately and dispose of it properly.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

3. Setup

Before first use, it is recommended to fully charge the battery.

  1. Initial Charge: Connect the battery to a compatible NiMH charger. Ensure the charger's specifications match the battery's requirements (7.2V, 1650mAh). Allow the battery to charge until the charger indicates a full charge.
  2. Installation: Align the battery with the battery compartment of your compatible Icom radio (e.g., IC-F12, IC-F21). Gently slide the battery into place until it clicks securely. Ensure the contacts are clean and properly aligned.

4. Operating

Once installed and charged, the battery powers your compatible Icom radio. For optimal performance and longevity of NiMH batteries, follow these guidelines:

  • Charging Cycle: NiMH batteries benefit from occasional full discharge and recharge cycles to prevent memory effect. However, modern NiMH batteries have reduced memory effect compared to older generations.
  • Regular Use: Use the battery as needed for your radio operations. Monitor the radio's battery indicator to determine when recharging is necessary.
  • Temperature: Operate the battery within its specified temperature range. Extreme cold can reduce capacity, while extreme heat can damage the battery.

5. Maintenance

Proper maintenance extends the life of your battery:

  • Cleaning: Periodically clean the battery contacts and the radio's battery compartment contacts with a dry, lint-free cloth to ensure good electrical connection.
  • Storage: If storing the battery for an extended period, charge it to approximately 50-70% capacity and store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Avoid storing fully charged or fully discharged.
  • Disposal: NiMH batteries contain materials that require proper disposal. Do not dispose of the battery in household waste. Look for local battery recycling programs or designated collection points. The battery label explicitly states: "NI-MH BATTERY MUST BE RECYCLED OR DISPOSED OF PROPERLY."

  • Battery Not Charging: Ensure the charger is functioning correctly and the battery is properly seated. Check for any debris on the contacts.
  • Short Operating Time: The battery may not be fully charged, or its capacity may have degraded over time. Ensure full charge cycles are completed. If the battery is old, replacement may be necessary.
  • Radio Not Powering On: Verify the battery is correctly installed and fully charged. Check the radio's power switch and connections.

If problems persist, consult the radio's instruction manual or contact ExpertPower customer support.
