1. Introduction
The Liberty Pumps ALM-P1 is an indoor high liquid level alarm designed to provide an audible and visual alert when water or other liquids reach an undesirable level. This system is ideal for use in sump pits, sewage basins, holding tanks, and other applications where high liquid levels could cause damage. The alarm features a compact probe-mounted sensor, 115V operation with 9V battery backup, and auxiliary contacts for remote notification.
Please read this manual thoroughly before installation and operation to ensure proper function and safety.
2. Safety Information
WARNING: Electrical shock hazard. Always disconnect power before installing or servicing this unit. All wiring must be performed by a qualified electrician and comply with local electrical codes.
- Ensure the alarm unit is installed in a dry, indoor location, protected from moisture and extreme temperatures.
- Do not immerse the alarm unit in water. Only the probe sensor is designed for liquid contact.
- Use only a 9V alkaline battery for backup power. Do not use rechargeable batteries.
- Keep hands clear of moving parts if the alarm is connected to a pump system.
- This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm (Proposition 65 warning).
3. Package Contents
Verify that all components are present before beginning installation:
- ALM-P1 Alarm Unit
- Compact Probe Sensor with cable
- Mounting hardware (screws, anchors)
- Instruction Manual (this document)
Note: A 9V battery for backup power is required but not included.
4. Product Overview
The ALM-P1 alarm system consists of a main control unit and a separate probe sensor. The control unit houses the audible alarm, visual indicators, and electrical connections. The probe sensor detects the liquid level.

Figure 1: Liberty Pumps ALM-P1 Indoor High Liquid Level Alarm unit with probe sensor. This image shows the main alarm unit and the compact probe sensor designed to snap onto a discharge pipe.
Key Components:
- Alarm Unit: Contains the siren, visual indicator lights, power cord, and battery compartment.
- Probe Sensor: A compact sensor designed to detect liquid presence. It can be snapped onto a 1-1/4" or 1-1/2" discharge pipe.
- Auxiliary Contacts: Electrical terminals for connecting to external devices, such as a home security system or an auto-dialer, for remote notification.
5. Setup and Installation
5.1. Install 9V Battery Backup
- Locate the battery compartment on the alarm unit.
- Open the compartment cover.
- Connect a new 9V alkaline battery to the battery clip.
- Place the battery into the compartment and close the cover securely.
- The battery provides backup power during outages, ensuring the alarm functions even if main power is lost.
5.2. Mount the Alarm Unit
- Choose a dry, accessible indoor location for the alarm unit, away from direct moisture.
- Use the provided mounting hardware to secure the alarm unit to a wall or suitable surface. Ensure it is within reach of a standard 115V electrical outlet.
5.3. Install the Probe Sensor
- Identify the discharge pipe (1-1/4" or 1-1/2" diameter) in your sump pit or basin where you want to detect high liquid levels.
- Snap the compact probe sensor onto the discharge pipe at the desired alarm level. Ensure the sensor is securely attached and positioned to detect liquid at the critical height.
- Route the sensor cable back to the alarm unit, ensuring it is not pinched or damaged.
- Plug the sensor cable into the designated port on the alarm unit.
5.4. Connect to Power
- Plug the alarm unit's power cord into a standard 115V AC electrical outlet.
- The unit will perform a self-test, and the power indicator light should illuminate.
5.5. Auxiliary Contact Connection (Optional)
- If connecting to an external alarm system or auto-dialer, refer to the wiring diagram provided with your specific external device.
- Connect the auxiliary contacts on the ALM-P1 unit to the appropriate terminals on your external system. These contacts typically close or open when the alarm is triggered.
6. Operation
6.1. Normal Operation
Under normal conditions, with the liquid level below the probe sensor, the alarm unit will remain silent, and the power indicator light will be on (if applicable).
6.2. Alarm Activation
When the liquid level rises and makes contact with the probe sensor, the ALM-P1 alarm unit will activate:
- An audible siren will sound.
- A visual indicator (e.g., a red light) will illuminate or flash.
- The auxiliary contacts will change state, triggering any connected external devices.
6.3. Silencing the Alarm
To silence the audible alarm, press the "Silence" or "Reset" button on the alarm unit. The visual indicator will typically remain active until the liquid level drops below the sensor, indicating the condition that triggered the alarm is still present.
6.4. Alarm Reset
Once the liquid level has receded below the probe sensor, the alarm system will automatically reset to its normal monitoring state. If the audible alarm was silenced, it will be ready to sound again if the high liquid level condition reoccurs.
7. Maintenance
7.1. Battery Replacement
The 9V backup battery should be tested periodically and replaced annually, or immediately if a low battery indicator is present. A weak battery may compromise alarm functionality during a power outage.
- Disconnect the alarm unit from the 115V power outlet.
- Open the battery compartment.
- Remove the old 9V battery and dispose of it properly.
- Install a new 9V alkaline battery, ensuring correct polarity.
- Close the battery compartment and reconnect the alarm unit to power.
7.2. Sensor Cleaning and Inspection
Periodically inspect the probe sensor for any buildup of debris, grime, or mineral deposits that could interfere with its operation. Clean the sensor gently with a soft cloth and water if necessary. Ensure the sensor cable is free from damage.
7.3. System Test
It is recommended to test the alarm system monthly. To test:
- Simulate a high liquid level by carefully raising the probe sensor into a container of water, or by temporarily raising the water level in the basin until it contacts the sensor.
- The audible and visual alarms should activate.
- Press the silence button to confirm it works.
- Lower the water level or remove the sensor from the water. The alarm should reset.
- If the alarm fails to activate or reset, refer to the Troubleshooting section.
