This image displays the complete Panasonic SC-XH170 home theater system. It features a central DVD player unit, four compact satellite speakers, a horizontal center speaker, and a tall, slender subwoofer, all in a sleek black finish.

2. Setup

2.1 Unpacking and Component Identification

Carefully unpack all components and verify that all items are present:

  • DVD Receiver Unit
  • Subwoofer
  • Center Speaker
  • Four Satellite Speakers
  • Remote Control (with 2 AA batteries included)
  • Speaker Cables

2.2 Speaker Connection

Connect the speakers to the DVD receiver unit using the provided color-coded speaker cables. Ensure that each speaker cable is connected to its corresponding color-coded terminal on both the speaker and the receiver. Incorrect polarity can affect sound quality.

  • Front Left/Right Speakers: Position these to the left and right of your viewing area.
  • Center Speaker: Place this directly above or below your television.
  • Surround Left/Right Speakers: Position these to the sides or slightly behind your listening position.
  • Subwoofer: Place the subwoofer in a location that provides optimal bass response, typically in a corner or near a wall.

The system supports a selectable speaker layout, allowing configuration for 5.1ch Surround Layout or 5.1ch Front Layout, depending on your room setup and preference.

2.3 HDMI Connection (ARC)

Connect the DVD receiver unit to your television using an HDMI cable. For optimal audio return functionality, connect the HDMI cable to an HDMI port on your TV that is labeled with "ARC" (Audio Return Channel). This allows audio from your TV to be sent back to the home theater system with a single HDMI cable, simplifying connections.

2.4 Power Connection

After all audio and video connections are made, connect the power cord of the DVD receiver unit to an AC outlet.

3. Operating Instructions

3.1 Basic Operation

  • Power On/Off: Press the power button on the unit or remote control to turn the system on or off.
  • DVD Playback: Insert a DVD into the disc tray. Playback should begin automatically or can be initiated using the play button on the remote. The system features 1080p up-conversion for enhanced picture quality from standard DVDs.
  • Volume Control: Adjust the master volume using the remote control.

3.2 VIERA Link Functionality

The SC-XH170 supports VIERA Link, allowing you to operate compatible Panasonic AV components, including your VIERA TV, with a single remote control. Ensure your TV is VIERA Link compatible and the function is enabled in both the TV and home theater system settings.

3.3 Digital Music Connection for iPod/iPhone

Connect your iPod or iPhone to the USB port on the front of the DVD receiver unit. The system allows you to enjoy music, video, and photo content from your device. The content list can be displayed on your TV screen, and you can use the home theater system's remote control or a VIERA TV remote to select and play media.

3.4 Audio Return Channel (ARC)

When connected to an ARC-compatible TV via the designated HDMI ARC port, the system can receive audio signals directly from the TV. This eliminates the need for a separate audio cable connection between the TV's audio output and the main unit's audio input.

3.5 Clear Sound Digital Amplifier

The integrated Clear Sound Digital Amplifier technology analyzes and adjusts audio signals to minimize distortion, producing sound that is highly faithful to the original source.

3.6 AM/FM Tuner

The system includes an AM/FM tuner with 30 station presets. Use the remote control to scan and save your favorite radio stations.

4. Maintenance

4.1 Cleaning

To clean the unit, use a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, lightly dampen the cloth with water and then wipe dry. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, waxes, or solvents as they can damage the finish.

4.2 General Care

  • Do not expose the unit to direct sunlight, high temperatures, high humidity, or excessive dust.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation around the unit to prevent overheating.
  • Avoid placing heavy objects on top of the unit.
  • When not in use for extended periods, disconnect the power cord from the outlet.

5. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your home theater system, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

  • No Picture/Black Screen:
Ensure the HDMI cable is securely connected to both the DVD receiver and the TV. Verify that the TV input is set to the correct HDMI port. If using ARC, confirm it's connected to the designated ARC port on your TV.
  • No Sound or Poor Sound Quality:
Check all speaker connections to ensure they are secure and correctly matched by color. Verify that the volume is not muted or set too low. If using ARC, ensure the TV's audio output is set to the external audio system. Some users report a slight lag (around 10 seconds) for surround sound to engage after turning on the system.
  • Speaker Wires Too Short:
If the provided speaker wires are insufficient for your room layout, longer speaker wires can be purchased separately. Ensure they are of appropriate gauge for audio quality.
  • TV Turns On/Off with DVD Player:
This is a normal function of VIERA Link. If you prefer to control your TV and DVD player independently, you may need to disable the VIERA Link function in the settings of either the TV or the home theater system.
  • iPod/iPhone Not Recognized:
Ensure your device is properly connected to the USB port. Try disconnecting and reconnecting the device. Ensure the device's software is up to date.

If the problem persists after attempting these solutions, please contact Panasonic customer support.
