6. Installation

6.1. Security Type Conversion (Fail-Secure / Fail-Safe)

The electric strike is field-programmable for either fail-secure (locked when unpowered) or fail-safe (unlocked when unpowered) operation. The default setting is Fail-Secure.

  1. Fully remove both screws from the strike back.
  2. Use wires to slide components until holes align for the desired mode.
  3. Verify the mode by pressing the strike jaw.
  4. Fully secure both screws to set the mode.

6.2. Physical Installation Steps

  1. Remove Existing Strike Plate: Carefully unscrew and remove the existing strike plate from the door frame.
  2. Cut Frame According to Instructions: Use the provided template or refer to the dimensions (4-7/8" x 1-1/4" x 1-1/4") to cut the door frame opening to accommodate the electric strike body. Ensure precise measurements for a flush fit.
  3. Install Mounting Tabs (if applicable): If using mounting tabs for specific frame types, secure them into the prepared frame opening.
  4. Install Electric Strike: Insert the electric strike into the prepared opening. Ensure the wires are routed correctly for connection. Secure the strike with the provided mounting screws.

6.3. Wiring

The electric strike features a non-polarized connection, meaning the red and black wires can be connected without specific polarity. Connect the wires to your access control system's power supply (24VDC) and control module. A diode (1N4007) is included to protect against EMF surges and should be installed across the strike's terminals, with the band (cathode) towards the positive (+) terminal.

7. Operation

The electric door strike operates in conjunction with an access control system (e.g., keypad, card reader, remote control) and a cylindrical lock set. When an authorized signal is received, the strike's jaw retracts, allowing the door to be opened. The operation mode (fail-secure or fail-safe) determines the strike's behavior during a power outage.

  • Fail-Secure Mode: The door remains locked when power is removed. This is ideal for exterior doors or areas requiring high security.
  • Fail-Safe Mode: The door unlocks when power is removed. This is typically used for emergency exits or areas where egress is critical during a power failure.

8. Maintenance

  • Regularly inspect the strike for any signs of wear, damage, or loose screws.
  • Keep the strike mechanism clean and free from debris to ensure smooth operation.
  • Do not lubricate the internal mechanism unless specifically recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Test the electric strike periodically to ensure it functions correctly with your access control system.

9. Troubleshooting

  • Strike not engaging/disengaging: Check power supply connections and ensure the correct voltage (24VDC) is being supplied. Verify wiring to the access control system.
  • Intermittent operation: Inspect for loose wiring connections or damage to the wires. Ensure the strike is properly aligned with the door's latch bolt.
  • Excessive noise: Check for proper alignment and ensure no foreign objects are obstructing the strike's jaw.
  • Strike remains locked/unlocked: Confirm the fail-secure/fail-safe setting is correct for your application. If in fail-secure mode, ensure power is consistently supplied when needed.
