General Description of Fuel Filtering

The fuel filtering system on the Case 400 Diesel Tractor is designed to deliver clean fuel to the high-precision fuel injection equipment. To ensure clean fuel, the following components and procedures are critical:

  1. Fuel Tank Breather Filter: An air filtering element located in the fuel tank breather.
  2. Fuel Tank Filter Strainer: All fuel pumped from the tank passes through this strainer.
  3. Fuel Tank Water Trap: Designed to remove harmful moisture settling out of the fuel.
  4. Fuel Tank Stand Pipe: Fuel is drawn from approximately 3/4 inch above the tank bottom.
  5. First Stage Filter: Fuel from the tank is drawn through an edge wound bronze filter element.
  6. Second Stage Filter: Fuel is pumped through the second stage filter by the transfer pump.
  7. Final Stage Filter: Fuel is pumped through the final stage filter under relief valve pressure before entering the injection pump.

4. Engine Component Repair: Valve Seats, Connecting Rods, and Bearings

Valve Seat Maintenance Tools

Power Driven Guide Cleaner (Figure K-38)

A power-driven valve guide cleaner, similar to the one shown, should be used to remove all loose carbon prior to using the reamer. An approved puller is required for removing exhaust valve seat inserts.

Approved Driver for Installing Intake Valve Seat Insert (Figure K-41)

This tool, or an equivalent, is approved for inserting exhaust valve seat inserts into the "400" Diesel Engine cylinder head. The Service Tool No. 910 Driver with No. 900-A Driver Extension (or equivalent) may be used.

Dial Indicator (Figure K-42)

An accurate dial indicator, similar to the one shown, is used to check valve seat run-out.

Connecting Rods and Bearing Liners

Proper installation and maintenance of connecting rods and bearing liners are critical for engine integrity. This section covers procedures for both diesel and spark ignition engines.

The connecting rod bearing liners are precision liner inserts and must be installed with the bearing oil groove facing the rod. New spark ignition liners are identified by their shiny bearing surface; the diesel by their dull bearing surface.

Connecting rod bearings are numbered consecutively, 1-4, from the front of the engine. The number is stamped on the connecting rod and on the rod bearing cap. The bearing caps are not interchangeable; the number on the cap must match the number on the connecting rod.

The bearing liner halves are identical. The important thing is to get the bearing liner lock aligned with the lock groove in the rod and in the cap (Figure M-54).
