2. Setup
2.1. Unpacking and Initial Inspection
Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Ensure the following items are present:
- OM SYSTEM OLYMPUS SZ-12 Digital Camera
- Rechargeable Lithium Metal Battery
- USB Cable
- Wrist Strap
- User Manual (this document)
If any items are missing or damaged, please contact your retailer or Olympus customer support.
2.2. Inserting the Battery and Memory Card
1. Open the Battery/Card Compartment: Locate the battery/card compartment cover on the bottom of the camera. Slide the latch to open the cover.
2. Insert the Battery: Insert the provided Lithium Metal battery into the battery slot, ensuring the correct orientation as indicated by the diagram inside the compartment. Push until it clicks into place.
3. Insert the Memory Card: Insert a compatible SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card (not included) into the memory card slot with the label facing the correct direction. Push until it clicks into place. For Wi-Fi connectivity, an optional EyeFi card can be used.
4. Close the Cover: Close the battery/card compartment cover securely until the latch clicks.
2.3. Charging the Battery
Connect the camera to a power source using the supplied USB cable and a USB AC adapter (not included) or a computer. The battery indicator will show charging status. Ensure the battery is fully charged before first use.
2.4. Powering On/Off
Press the [POWER] button located on the top of the camera to turn the camera on or off.
3. Operating the Camera
3.1. Basic Photography
1. Select a Mode: Use the mode dial (if present) or menu options to select your desired shooting mode. For general use, the Intelligent Auto mode is recommended.
2. Frame Your Shot: Use the 3-inch LCD display to compose your image. Utilize the 24x optical zoom by pressing the zoom lever (W for wide, T for telephoto) to adjust your focal length.
3. Focus: Half-press the shutter button to allow the camera to focus. The focus frame will turn green when focus is achieved.
4. Capture: Fully press the shutter button to take the picture.
3.2. HD Video Recording
The SZ-12 allows for high-definition video recording with a simple one-touch button. To start recording, press the dedicated [MOVIE] button. Press it again to stop recording. Videos can be played back on an HD television using the HDMI output.
3.3. Magic Art Filters (Still & Movie)
Add unique artistic flair to your photos and videos directly in-camera with Olympus Magic Art Filters. These effects are applied without the need for additional software or editing time.
Available filters include:

3.4. High-Speed Sequential Shooting
Capture fast-moving action with the high-speed burst shooting feature. This allows you to take a rapid sequence of photos with a single press of the shutter button, increasing your chances of getting the perfect shot.
3.5. Dual Image Stabilization
The camera features Dual Image Stabilization, which combines Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization with high ISO sensitivity and fast shutter speeds. This technology works to reduce blur caused by camera shake or subject movement, ensuring crisp and clear images even in challenging conditions.
3.6. Intelligent Auto
Intelligent Auto mode automatically identifies the scene you are shooting from up to 30 different scene modes (e.g., Portrait, Landscape, Night + Portrait, Macro, Sports). It then adjusts the camera settings for optimal results, making it easy to achieve great photos without manual adjustments.
4. Maintenance
4.1. Cleaning the Camera
- Camera Body: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the camera body. For stubborn dirt, lightly dampen the cloth with water or a mild cleaning solution.
- Lens: Use a lens brush or a blower to remove dust. For smudges, use a lens cleaning cloth specifically designed for optical surfaces. Avoid touching the lens with your fingers.
