The Rokinon 24mm f/1.4 lens features a durable metal barrel, a wide, ribbed manual focus ring for precise adjustments, and an aperture ring with clear f-stop markings. The lens includes a removable petal-shaped lens hood to minimize flare and protect the front element. The rear mount is designed for secure attachment to compatible camera bodies.
Setup
Attaching the Lens
- Ensure your camera is turned OFF before attaching or detaching any lens.
- Remove the rear lens cap from the Rokinon 24mm lens and the body cap from your camera.
- Align the red dot on the lens barrel with the corresponding red dot on your camera's lens mount.
- Gently insert the lens into the camera mount and rotate it clockwise (for Canon EF mount) until it clicks into place. Do not force the lens.
- Attach the front lens cap when the lens is not in use to protect the front element.
Attaching the Lens Hood
- Align the white dot on the lens hood with the white dot on the front of the lens barrel.
- Twist the hood clockwise until it locks securely into place.
- To store, the hood can be reversed and mounted onto the lens.
Operating the Lens
Manual Focus
This is a manual focus lens. To achieve sharp focus:
- Set your camera to Manual Focus (MF) mode.
- Look through the viewfinder or use Live View on your camera's LCD screen.
- Rotate the wide, ribbed focus ring on the lens until your subject appears sharp. Many modern cameras offer focus peaking or magnification aids in Live View to assist with precise manual focusing.
- The focus distance scale on the lens barrel provides an indication of the current focus distance in meters and feet.
Adjusting Aperture
The aperture is adjusted directly on the lens using the aperture ring.
- Rotate the aperture ring to select your desired f-stop (e.g., f/1.4, f/2.8, f/5.6).
- A smaller f-number (e.g., f/1.4) indicates a wider aperture, allowing more light to enter the lens and producing a shallower depth of field (more background blur).
- A larger f-number (e.g., f/22) indicates a narrower aperture, allowing less light and producing a greater depth of field (more of the scene in focus).
- Note that your camera may not display the selected aperture value as this is a manual lens without electronic contacts.
Maintenance
Proper care and maintenance will ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Rokinon 24mm lens.
- Cleaning the Lens Elements: Use a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth specifically designed for optics. For stubborn smudges, use a small amount of lens cleaning solution applied to the cloth, not directly to the lens. Always remove dust and loose particles with a blower brush before wiping.
- Cleaning the Lens Body: Wipe the lens barrel with a clean, dry cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or solvents.
- Storage: Store the lens in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Use the provided lens caps and carrying pouch to protect it from dust and scratches. If storing for extended periods, consider using a dehumidifying cabinet to prevent mold growth.
- Handling: Avoid dropping or subjecting the lens to strong impacts. Do not touch the glass elements with your fingers.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Images are blurry/out of focus. | Incorrect manual focus. | Ensure camera is set to MF. Use Live View magnification or focus peaking for precise focusing. Practice manual focusing. |
| Lens not attaching securely to camera. | Incorrect alignment or obstruction. | Ensure red dots are aligned. Check for any debris on the lens mount or camera mount. Do not force. |
| Dark corners (vignetting) in images. | Normal for wide-angle lenses, especially at wide apertures. | This is a characteristic of some wide-angle lenses. It can often be corrected in post-processing software. Stopping down the aperture (e.g., to f/2.8 or f/4) can also reduce vignetting. |
| Dust or smudges on lens elements. | Improper handling or storage. | Clean the lens elements carefully using a blower brush and a microfiber cloth. Refer to the Maintenance section. |
