Self-Watering System Diagram

This diagram illustrates the internal workings of the Lechuza self-watering system, showing the water reservoir at the bottom, the LECHUZA-PON layer, the plant roots extending into the water, and the water level indicator.
Setup Instructions
- Assemble the Self-Watering System: Insert the water level indicator into the designated opening in the planter liner. Ensure the indicator moves freely.
- Place the LECHUZA-PON: Spread a layer of LECHUZA-PON plant substrate at the bottom of the planter liner, covering the water reservoir area. This layer acts as a buffer between the water and the potting soil.
- Position the Plant: Place your plant, along with its root ball, into the planter liner. Fill the remaining space with high-quality potting soil. Ensure the plant is centered and stable.
- Initial Watering: For the first 12 weeks after planting, water your plant from above as you normally would. This allows the roots to grow into the LECHUZA-PON layer and establish contact with the water reservoir.
- Insert Liner into Outer Planter: Carefully lower the filled planter liner into the outer Cubico Color 30 planter.

Operating Instructions
Watering with the Self-Watering System
After the initial 12-week acclimatization period, you can begin using the self-watering system. Fill the water reservoir through the designated filler shaft until the water level indicator reaches the "max" mark. The plant will then draw water as needed from the reservoir.
Monitor the water level indicator regularly. When the indicator drops to the "min" mark, allow a short dry period (typically a few days, depending on the plant and environment) before refilling the reservoir. This dry period helps prevent root rot and encourages healthy root development.
Indoor and Outdoor Use
For indoor use, ensure the drainage plug at the bottom of the planter is securely closed. This prevents water from leaking onto surfaces.
For outdoor use, remove the drainage plug from the bottom of the planter. This allows excess rainwater to drain away, preventing waterlogging and protecting your plant's roots from oversaturation.
Maintenance
Cleaning
Clean the planter and liner periodically with a mild soap and water solution. Avoid abrasive cleaners that could damage the finish. The durable plastic is easy to wipe clean.
System Check
Occasionally check the water level indicator and filler shaft to ensure they are free from debris and functioning correctly. If the indicator seems stuck, gently clean it.
LECHUZA-PON Replacement
While LECHUZA-PON is long-lasting, it may need replenishment or replacement over many years, especially if you repot plants frequently. Follow the instructions provided with new LECHUZA-PON substrate.
Troubleshooting
Plant Wilting/Yellowing
If your plant shows signs of stress (wilting, yellowing leaves), first check the water level indicator. Ensure the plant is not constantly sitting in water (if the indicator is always at "max") or completely dry (if it's at "min" for too long). Adjust your watering schedule accordingly.
Water Level Indicator Not Moving
Ensure the water level indicator is correctly assembled and not obstructed by soil or roots. Remove the liner and check for any blockages in the shaft or float mechanism. Clean if necessary.
Water Leaking (Indoor Use)
Verify that the drainage plug at the bottom of the outer planter is securely inserted and sealed. If leakage persists, inspect the plug for damage.
