1. Introduction

2. Important Safety Guidelines

4. Installation

4.1 Choosing a Location

For maximum detection, install an alarm inside every bedroom, outside every sleeping area, and on every level of the dwelling, including basements. Avoid installing in locations with extreme temperatures, high humidity, or near combustion appliances that may cause nuisance alarms.

4.2 Battery Installation

1. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the alarm.
2. Open the battery compartment cover.
3. Insert the included 9-volt Energizer Alkaline battery, ensuring correct polarity (+ and -). The alarm will chirp once the battery is correctly installed.
4. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

4.3 Plugging In the Alarm

1. After installing the battery, plug the alarm directly into a standard, unswitched 120V AC electrical outlet.

5. Operation and Indicators

Once installed and powered, the MCND401 continuously monitors for carbon monoxide and natural gas.

5.1 Normal Operation

• The green POWER LED will be steadily illuminated.
• The digital display will typically show '0' or remain blank during normal operation, indicating no detectable CO.

5.2 Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarm

• Alarm Sound: Four short beeps, followed by five seconds of silence, repeating.
• CO LED: Flashes red.
• Digital Display: Shows the detected CO concentration in PPM.

What to Do When the CO Alarm Sounds:

1. Immediately move to fresh air outdoors or open all doors and windows to ventilate the area.
2. Call your emergency services (Fire Department or 911) and your gas supplier.
3. Do not re-enter the premises until the alarm has stopped, the area has been aired out, and your emergency services have determined it is safe.

5.3 Natural Gas Alarm

• Alarm Sound: Continuous, rapid beeping.
• GAS LED: Flashes blue.
• Digital Display: Remains blank or shows 'GAS'.

What to Do When the Natural Gas Alarm Sounds:

1. Immediately move to fresh air outdoors.
2. Do NOT operate electrical switches, light matches, or use any phone in the building.
3. Call your gas supplier from a neighbor's phone. If you cannot reach your gas supplier, call the fire department.
4. Do not re-enter the premises until the gas leak has been stopped and the area has been aired out.

5.4 Button Functions

• TEST/SILENCE Button: Press and hold to test the alarm's sound and indicators. Press briefly to silence an active alarm for a short period (e.g., during a known, temporary gas presence like cooking fumes).
• PEAK/RESET Button: Press to display the highest CO concentration detected since the last reset. Press and hold to clear the peak memory.

6. Testing and Maintenance

Regular testing and maintenance are crucial to ensure your alarm is functioning correctly.

6.1 Testing the Alarm

Test the alarm weekly by pressing and holding the TEST/SILENCE button until the alarm sounds. The alarm should emit the CO and Natural Gas alarm patterns, and the corresponding LEDs should flash. Release the button to stop the test.

6.2 Cleaning the Alarm

Clean the alarm at least once a month to remove dust and debris. Use a soft, damp cloth to wipe the exterior. Do not use cleaning agents or solvents. Do not spray directly into the alarm's vents.

6.3 Battery Replacement

The 9-volt battery should be replaced annually or when the alarm indicates a low battery condition (a chirp approximately every 30-60 seconds). To replace the battery:

1. Unplug the alarm from the electrical outlet.
2. Open the battery compartment cover.
3. Remove the old 9-volt battery.
4. Insert a new 9-volt Energizer Alkaline battery, observing polarity.
5. Close the battery compartment cover.
6. Plug the alarm back into the electrical outlet.

6.4 End-of-Service Life Warning

This alarm has an approximate service life of 7 years. When the unit reaches the end of its life, it will indicate this with a specific warning (e.g., a series of chirps or a specific display message). At this point, the alarm must be replaced immediately to ensure continued protection.
