Setup
Powering the Machine
The Smartek Mini Sewing Machine can be powered by either 4 AA batteries or an AC adapter (not included).
- Battery Installation: Open the battery compartment cover on the bottom of the machine. Insert 4 AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-). Close the cover securely.
- AC Adapter Connection: If using an AC adapter, plug the adapter into the DC input jack on the machine and then into a standard wall outlet.
Threading the Machine (Upper Thread)
- Ensure the machine is turned off and unplugged.
- Place a spool of thread on the spool pin.
- Guide the thread through the first thread guide (usually a small metal loop or hook).
- Pass the thread through the tension dial, ensuring it is seated correctly within the tension discs.
- Thread the take-up lever from right to left.
- Guide the thread down to the needle, passing it through any remaining thread guides on the needle bar.
- Thread the needle from front to back. Pull about 6 inches of thread through the needle eye.
Installing the Bobbin (Lower Thread)
The machine uses a drop-in bobbin system.
- Ensure the machine is turned off and unplugged.
- Open the bobbin cover plate located on the sewing bed.
- Insert a wound bobbin into the bobbin case, ensuring the thread unwinds in the correct direction (typically counter-clockwise).
- Guide the bobbin thread through the tension spring or slot in the bobbin case.
- Hold the upper thread with one hand, and slowly turn the handwheel towards you to lower the needle. The needle will pick up the bobbin thread.
- Pull both the upper and lower threads to the back of the machine, under the presser foot.
- Close the bobbin cover plate.
Operating the Machine
Starting to Sew
- Place the fabric under the presser foot.
- Lower the presser foot lever.
- Select your desired speed using the L/H switch (L for low, H for high).
- Choose your preferred operation method:
- Foot Pedal: Connect the foot pedal to the machine. Press the foot pedal to start sewing and release to stop.
- Hand Switch: Press the ON/OFF button on the machine to start sewing. Press it again to stop.
- Guide the fabric gently as the machine sews. Do not pull or push the fabric forcefully.
- When finished, raise the needle to its highest position using the handwheel.
- Raise the presser foot lever and remove the fabric.
- Cut the threads, leaving enough length for the next stitch.
Adjusting Stitch Quality
If stitches are too loose or too tight, adjust the tension dial. Turn it clockwise to increase tension and counter-clockwise to decrease tension. Test on a scrap piece of fabric until the stitches are balanced on both sides.
Maintenance
- Cleaning: Regularly clean lint and dust from the bobbin area and feed dogs using a small brush. Ensure the machine is unplugged before cleaning.
- Needle Replacement: If the needle becomes bent, dull, or breaks, replace it immediately. Loosen the needle clamp screw, remove the old needle, insert a new needle with the flat side facing the back, and tighten the screw.
- Storage: Store the machine in a dry, dust-free environment when not in use.
