Safety Information

Always prioritize safety during installation and maintenance. Failure to follow safety precautions can result in injury or damage to the product or vehicle.

  • Professional installation is recommended for optimal results and safety.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including safety glasses and gloves, when handling the radiator and working with automotive fluids.
  • Ensure the vehicle's engine is cool before beginning any work on the cooling system. Hot coolant can cause severe burns.
  • Properly dispose of old coolant according to local environmental regulations.
  • Do not operate the vehicle without sufficient coolant in the system.

Setup and Installation

Before You Begin

  • Verify that all components are present and undamaged upon unboxing.
  • Gather necessary tools: wrench set, pliers, hose clamps, coolant drain pan, new coolant, funnel, and a clean rag.
  • Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and the parking brake is engaged. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

Installation Steps

  1. Drain Coolant: Place a drain pan under the radiator drain cock (petcock) and open it to drain the old coolant. Once drained, close the petcock.
  2. Remove Old Radiator: Disconnect the upper and lower radiator hoses, and any overflow or sensor lines. Remove mounting bolts or clips securing the old radiator. Carefully lift and remove the old radiator from the vehicle.
  3. Inspect Area: Clean the radiator mounting area and inspect hoses and clamps for wear. Replace any worn components.
  4. Install New Radiator: Carefully lower the Griffin Radiator 1-25182-X into position. Ensure it seats correctly in the mounting points. Secure it with the appropriate bolts or clips.
  5. Connect Hoses: Attach the upper (top left) and lower (bottom right) radiator hoses to the new radiator's inlet and outlet. Secure them with hose clamps. Reconnect any overflow or sensor lines.
  6. Fill with Coolant: Using a funnel, slowly fill the radiator with the recommended coolant mixture. Fill until the coolant level reaches the top of the filler neck.
  7. Bleed Air: Start the engine with the radiator cap off (or reservoir cap off if applicable) and allow it to reach operating temperature. As the engine warms, air bubbles will escape. Top off coolant as needed. Once the thermostat opens and coolant circulates, replace the radiator cap.
  8. Check for Leaks: After the engine has cooled, recheck the coolant level and inspect all connections for any signs of leaks.

Operating Guidelines

Once installed, the Griffin Radiator is designed for reliable operation. Monitor your vehicle's temperature gauge regularly to ensure the engine operates within its normal range. Any sudden or sustained increase in temperature may indicate an issue with the cooling system.

  • Avoid operating the vehicle with a low coolant level.
  • Do not remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot.
  • If the engine overheats, pull over safely, turn off the engine, and allow it to cool before inspecting the cooling system.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance of your cooling system will extend the life of your radiator and prevent potential issues.

  • Coolant Level Check: Periodically check the coolant level in the overflow reservoir and the radiator (when cool). Top off with the recommended coolant mixture as needed.
  • Coolant Flush: Follow your vehicle manufacturer's recommendations for coolant flush intervals. This typically ranges from every 30,000 to 60,000 miles or every 2-5 years.
  • Radiator Cleaning: Keep the radiator fins clean from debris (leaves, insects, dirt) to ensure optimal airflow. Use a soft brush or compressed air to gently clean the fins. Do not bend the fins.
  • Hose and Clamp Inspection: Regularly inspect radiator hoses for cracks, swelling, or softness. Check hose clamps for tightness.
  • Leak Inspection: Periodically check for any signs of coolant leaks around the radiator, hoses, and connections.

Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your radiator.

Issue Possible Cause Solution
Engine Overheating Low coolant level, clogged radiator fins, faulty thermostat, air in system, failing water pump. Check coolant level and top off. Clean radiator fins. Inspect thermostat. Bleed air from system. Consult a mechanic for water pump inspection.
Coolant Leaks Loose hose clamps, damaged hoses, cracked radiator, faulty petcock. Tighten hose clamps. Replace damaged hoses. Inspect radiator for damage (if found, replacement may be necessary). Ensure petcock is fully closed and not damaged.
Poor Heater Performance Low coolant level, air in cooling system, clogged heater core. Check coolant level. Bleed air from the system. Consult a mechanic for heater core inspection.
