Introduction

This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the safe and effective use of your Olympus SH-21 digital camera. The Olympus SH-21 is a compact digital camera featuring a 16.0 MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor, 12.5x optical zoom, and a touchscreen for intuitive operation. Please read this manual thoroughly before using your camera and keep it for future reference.

1. Setup

1.1. Package Contents

Verify that all items are present in the package:

  • Olympus SH-21 Digital Camera
  • Lithium-Ion Battery
  • USB Cable
  • AC Adapter (for charging)
  • Strap
  • User Manual (this document)

1.2. Inserting the Battery and Memory Card

The Olympus SH-21 uses one Lithium-Ion battery. An SD memory card (not always included) is required to store photos and videos.

  1. Locate the battery/card compartment cover on the bottom of the camera.
  2. Slide the cover release latch and open the cover.
  3. Insert the Lithium-Ion battery with the contacts facing the correct direction, as indicated inside the compartment. Push until it clicks into place.
  4. Insert an SD memory card into the card slot with the label facing the front of the camera. Push until it clicks.
  5. Close the compartment cover and slide the latch to lock it.

1.3. Charging the Battery

Before initial use, fully charge the battery.

  1. Ensure the battery is inserted into the camera.
  2. Connect the USB cable to the camera's USB port.
  3. Connect the other end of the USB cable to the AC adapter.
  4. Plug the AC adapter into a power outlet. The charging indicator light will illuminate.
  5. Charging is complete when the indicator light turns off.

1.4. Initial Settings

Upon first power-on, you may be prompted to set the date, time, and language. Follow the on-screen instructions using the touchscreen or control buttons.

2. Operating the Camera

2.1. Power On/Off

Press the ON/OFF button located on the top of the camera to power it on or off.

2.2. Taking Photos

  1. Turn the camera on.
  2. Select your desired shooting mode using the mode dial (e.g., i-AUTO for automatic settings, SCN for scene modes).
  3. Frame your shot using the LCD screen.
  4. Use the zoom lever to adjust the optical zoom (up to 12.5x).
  5. Press the shutter button halfway down to focus. The focus frame will turn green when focus is achieved.
  6. Press the shutter button fully to take the picture.

The camera features Optical Image Stabilization to reduce blur caused by camera shake.

2.3. Recording Videos

The Olympus SH-21 supports video recording.

  1. In a shooting mode, press the dedicated Movie Record Button (often marked with a red dot) to start recording.
  2. Press the button again to stop recording.

2.4. Playback

To view your photos and videos:

  1. Press the Playback button (often marked with a triangle icon).
  2. Use the directional pad or touchscreen to navigate through your images and videos.
  3. Press the OK button to view a selected item.

2.5. Transferring Files to a Computer

You can transfer photos and videos to a computer using the supplied USB cable.

  1. Connect the camera to your computer using the USB cable.
  2. Turn on the camera.
  3. Select the "Storage" or "PC" option on the camera's screen if prompted.
  4. The camera will appear as a removable drive on your computer, allowing you to copy files.

3. Maintenance

3.1. Cleaning the Camera

  • Use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean the camera body.
  • For the lens and LCD screen, use a specialized lens cleaning cloth and solution. Avoid harsh chemicals.
  • Never touch the lens or screen with your fingers.

3.2. Battery Care

  • Store the battery in a cool, dry place when not in use.
  • Avoid exposing the battery to extreme temperatures.
  • If the camera will not be used for an extended period, remove the battery.

3.3. Storage

Store the camera in a dry, dust-free environment, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Use a camera case for protection during transport.

4. Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause / Solution
Camera does not turn on.
  • Battery is depleted. Charge the battery.
  • Battery is inserted incorrectly. Reinsert the battery correctly.
Photos are blurry.
  • Camera shake. Hold the camera steady or use a tripod.
  • Subject is out of focus. Ensure the camera focuses correctly before pressing the shutter fully.
  • Insufficient light. Use flash or shoot in a brighter environment.
"Card Full" message appears.
  • Memory card is full. Transfer photos to a computer and delete them from the card, or insert a new card.
Cannot transfer photos to computer.
  • USB cable is not connected properly. Reconnect the cable.
  • Camera is not in "Storage" or "PC" mode. Select the correct mode on the camera.
  • Computer drivers may be needed. Refer to Olympus support website.
