1. Important Safety Information

Read all safety warnings and instructions before operating this hedge trimmer. Failure to follow the warnings and instructions may result in electric shock, fire, and/or serious injury.

General Power Tool Safety Warnings

  • Work Area Safety: Keep the work area clean and well-lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust.
  • Electrical Safety: Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges, and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
  • Personal Safety: Always wear eye protection. Use appropriate personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, hearing protection, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or respiratory protection when necessary.
  • Tool Use and Care: Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. It will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
  • Battery Tool Use and Care: Recharge only with the charger specified by the manufacturer. A charger that is suitable for one type of battery pack may create a risk of fire when used with another battery pack.

Hedge Trimmer Specific Safety Warnings

  • Keep all parts of the body away from the cutter blade. Do not remove cut material or hold material to be cut when blades are moving.
  • Carry the hedge trimmer by the handle with the cutter blade stopped.
  • Hold the power tool by insulated gripping surfaces only, because the cutter blade may contact hidden wiring or its own cord.
  • Before use, inspect the hedge for foreign objects such as wire fences.
  • Always ensure a firm footing and balance. Do not overreach.

3. Setup

3.1 Charging the Battery

  1. Ensure the battery charger is connected to a standard household electrical outlet.
  2. Slide the 18V NiCad battery pack into the charger. Ensure it is fully seated.
  3. The charging indicator light on the charger will illuminate, indicating that the battery is charging.
  4. Allow the battery to charge for the recommended time (refer to charger instructions, typically 9 hours for a full charge).
  5. Once charging is complete, remove the battery from the charger.

Note: New batteries are not fully charged and require charging before first use. For optimal performance, allow the battery to cool down before charging if it has been recently used.

3.2 Installing the Battery

  1. Ensure the hedge trimmer is turned off and the trigger switch is disengaged.
  2. Locate the battery port on the hedge trimmer.
  3. Align the battery pack with the battery port and slide it firmly into place until it clicks, indicating it is securely locked.
  4. To remove the battery, press the release button (if present) and slide the battery out.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Starting and Stopping the Trimmer

  • To Start: Hold the front handle and depress the safety switch (if applicable), then squeeze the trigger switch on the rear handle. The blades will begin to move.
  • To Stop: Release the trigger switch. The blades will stop. Always ensure the blades have come to a complete stop before setting the trimmer down.

4.2 Trimming Techniques

  • General Trimming: Hold the trimmer with both hands, ensuring a firm grip. Use a sweeping motion to cut through hedges.
  • Horizontal Cutting: For the tops of hedges, hold the trimmer level and sweep across the top.
  • Vertical Cutting: For the sides of hedges, hold the trimmer vertically and sweep upwards or downwards.
  • Branch Capacity: The NHT2218 is designed to cut branches up to 3/4 inch thick. Do not attempt to cut thicker branches, as this can damage the blade or motor.
  • Avoid Overloading: Do not force the trimmer through dense material. Allow the blades to work at their own pace.

Tip: For best results, trim hedges when they are dry. Wet branches can clog the blades and make trimming more difficult.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your hedge trimmer.

5.1 Blade Care

  • Cleaning: After each use, ensure the trimmer is off and the battery is removed. Use a stiff brush to remove debris, sap, and leaves from the blades.
  • Lubrication: Apply a light machine oil or blade lubricant to the blades after cleaning to prevent rust and ensure smooth operation.
  • Sharpening: The blades are pre-hardened and rust-resistant. If sharpening is required, it is recommended to have it done by a qualified service technician.

5.2 Battery Care

  • Store batteries in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Do not store batteries in a discharged state for extended periods. Recharge them periodically.
  • Do not expose batteries to water or moisture.

5.3 Storage

  • Always attach the blade cover before storing the hedge trimmer.
  • Store the trimmer in a dry, secure location out of reach of children.
  • If storing for an extended period, ensure the battery is fully charged and then removed from the tool.
