User Manual

1. Introduction and Overview

The OBDLink SX USB is a professional-grade OBD-II automotive scan tool designed to transform your Windows PC, laptop, or tablet into a powerful diagnostic device. It enables users to read and clear 'Check Engine' lights, retrieve trouble codes, and monitor real-time engine data for most 1996 and newer cars and light trucks sold in the USA (excluding hybrid or electric vehicles).

This device connects to your vehicle's OBD-II port and to your computer via a standard USB-A connection, providing a reliable and fast communication link for vehicle diagnostics.

3. Setup Instructions

Follow these steps to set up your OBDLink SX USB device:

  1. Install Software: Download and install the necessary diagnostic software, such as OBDwiz, from the official OBDLink website. A license key for OBDwiz is typically included with your purchase. Ensure your Windows operating system is up to date.
  2. Connect to PC: Plug the USB-A end of the OBDLink SX USB device into an available USB-A port on your Windows PC, laptop, or tablet. If your device only has USB-C ports, a compatible USB-C to USB-A adapter will be required.
  3. Driver Installation: The necessary drivers should install automatically upon connecting the device to your computer. If not, refer to the Quick Start Guide or the OBDLink support website for manual driver installation instructions.
  4. Locate Vehicle OBD-II Port: The OBD-II port is usually located under the dashboard on the driver's side of the vehicle. Consult your vehicle's owner's manual if you cannot locate it.
  5. Connect to Vehicle: With the vehicle's ignition off, plug the 16-pin OBD-II connector of the OBDLink SX USB into your vehicle's OBD-II port. Ensure a secure connection.

Once the OBDLink SX USB is physically connected to your vehicle and computer, you can begin diagnostics:

  1. Turn On Ignition: Turn your vehicle's ignition to the 'ON' position (engine can be off or running, depending on the diagnostic task).
  2. Launch Software: Open the diagnostic software (e.g., OBDwiz) on your Windows PC.
  3. Establish Connection: Within the software, select the OBDLink SX USB device and establish a connection to the vehicle. The software will typically guide you through this process.
  4. Perform Diagnostics:
    • Read Trouble Codes: Access the 'Trouble Codes' or 'DTCs' section to view any stored diagnostic trouble codes and their descriptions.
    • Clear Trouble Codes: After addressing a vehicle issue, use the 'Clear Codes' function to turn off the 'Check Engine' light.
    • View Live Data: Monitor various engine parameters in real-time, such as RPM, vehicle speed, coolant temperature, oxygen sensor readings, and fuel trim.
    • Generate Reports: Many software applications allow you to save or print diagnostic reports for record-keeping.
  5. Disconnect: When finished, disconnect the software from the vehicle, turn off the vehicle's ignition, and then unplug the OBDLink SX USB device from the OBD-II port and your computer.
