3.3 Initial Formatting
The Verbatim Store 'n' Go portable hard drive comes pre-formatted in FAT32, allowing for immediate use on both Windows and Mac OS systems. For users requiring support for larger file sizes (over 4GB) or enhanced security features, reformatting the drive to NTFS (for Windows) or HFS+ (for Mac) may be necessary. Refer to your operating system's documentation for instructions on how to reformat a drive.
4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Data Transfer
Once connected, the hard drive will appear as a removable storage device on your computer. You can transfer files by dragging and dropping them to and from the drive, or by using your operating system's copy and paste functions. USB 3.0 offers significantly faster transfer speeds compared to USB 2.0.
4.2 Safely Removing the Drive
To prevent data corruption or damage to the drive, always safely remove the device before disconnecting it from your computer.
- Windows: Click the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" icon in the system tray, then select the Verbatim drive. Wait for the "Safe to Remove Hardware" notification before disconnecting.
- Mac OS: Drag the drive icon from your desktop to the Trash, or right-click (Control-click) the drive icon and select "Eject". Wait for the icon to disappear from the desktop before disconnecting.
5. Included Software
Your Verbatim Store 'n' Go hard drive includes pre-loaded software to enhance its functionality.
5.1 Nero BackItUp and Burn Essentials
This software suite provides three key applications:
- Backup: Create backups of your files, folders, and entire drives. You can perform manual backups or schedule automatic backups for regular data protection.
- Burn: Use Nero Express to burn your files to CDs or DVDs.
- Recovery: Nero RescueAgent assists in recovering files that may have become damaged.
Compatibility: Nero BackItUp and Burn Essentials is compatible with Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7. It is not compatible with Mac OS.
5.2 Green Button Energy Saving Software
The Green Button software helps conserve energy by suspending the hard drive's spinning when it is not in use. This feature increases efficiency and extends the drive's lifespan.
Sleep Setting Options:
- Set the suspend mode to activate after 10 minutes of inactivity, or in increments of 10 minutes up to 120 minutes.
- Double-click the Green Button icon on your desktop to immediately suspend the drive.
- Option to set the drive to "Never Suspend the disk" if continuous operation is required.
6. Maintenance
- Physical Care: Keep the drive in a clean, dry environment. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, or excessive moisture.
- Handle with Care: While portable, avoid dropping or subjecting the drive to strong impacts, as this can damage internal components.
- Regular Backups: Periodically back up important data from your external drive to another storage medium to prevent data loss in case of drive failure.
- Software Updates: Ensure your operating system and any drive-related software are kept up to date.

- Drive Not Detected:
- Ensure the USB cable is securely connected to both the drive and the computer.
- Try connecting the drive to a different USB port on your computer.
- Test the drive with a different USB cable if available.
- Restart your computer.
- Check your computer's Disk Management (Windows) or Disk Utility (Mac) to see if the drive is recognized but unformatted or has a drive letter conflict.
- Slow Data Transfer:
- Ensure you are connected to a USB 3.0 port for optimal speed. USB 2.0 ports will operate at slower speeds.
- Verify that your computer's USB 3.0 drivers are up to date.
- Data Corruption:
- Always use the "Safely Remove Hardware" function before disconnecting the drive.
- If data corruption occurs, use the Nero RescueAgent software (Windows only) or consider professional data recovery services.
