Setup and Assembly

The ECHO SRM-225 requires some assembly before first use. Ensure all components are present and undamaged before proceeding.

Required Tools:

  • Combination wrench (usually included)
  • Screwdriver (if applicable)

Assembly Steps:

  1. Attach the Debris Shield: Secure the debris shield to the trimmer head assembly using the provided bolts and nuts. Ensure it is firmly attached to prevent debris from being thrown towards the operator.
  2. Install the Trimmer Head: If not pre-installed, attach the Speed-Feed 400 trimmer head to the shaft. Follow the specific instructions in the included manual for proper alignment and tightening.
  3. Adjust the Handle: Position the ergonomic padded handle to a comfortable operating height and angle. Tighten the handle clamp securely.
  4. Fuel Mixture: Prepare the correct gasoline-to-oil mixture as specified by ECHO. Use fresh, high-quality gasoline and ECHO 2-stroke oil for optimal performance and engine longevity. Refer to the fuel section for detailed instructions.

Operating Instructions

Fueling the Trimmer:

  • Always mix gasoline with ECHO 2-stroke engine oil at the recommended ratio (typically 50:1).
  • Use fresh, unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 89 or higher.
  • Fill the 14.2 fl oz see-through fuel tank carefully, avoiding spills.

Starting the Engine:

  1. Place the trimmer on a flat, stable surface.
  2. Set the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
  3. Engage the choke (usually fully closed for cold starts).
  4. Press the primer bulb several times until fuel is visible in the return line.
  5. Pull the starter rope firmly and smoothly until the engine attempts to start (usually 1-3 pulls).
  6. Once the engine "pops" or attempts to start, open the choke halfway.
  7. Pull the starter rope again until the engine starts.
  8. Allow the engine to warm up for a few seconds, then fully open the choke.
  9. If the engine does not start after several pulls, refer to the troubleshooting section.

Trimming Operation:

  • Hold the trimmer firmly with both hands, maintaining a balanced stance.
  • Keep the trimmer head parallel to the ground for an even cut.
  • Use a sweeping motion, moving from side to side, to cut grass and weeds.
  • To advance the trimmer line, gently tap the Speed-Feed 400 head on the ground while the engine is running at full throttle.
  • Avoid contact with hard objects, fences, or trees to prevent damage to the trimmer line and head.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your ECHO SRM-225 string trimmer.

After Each Use:

  • Clean the exterior of the trimmer, removing grass clippings and debris.
  • Inspect the trimmer line for wear and replace if necessary.
  • Check for any loose fasteners and tighten them.

Monthly / Every 25 Hours of Operation:

  • Air Filter: Clean or replace the air filter. A dirty air filter can reduce engine performance.
  • Spark Plug: Inspect the spark plug. Clean or replace if it is fouled or worn. Ensure the gap is correct.
  • Fuel Filter: Inspect and replace the fuel filter if it appears clogged or dirty.
  • Gear Case: Check the grease level in the gear case (if applicable) and replenish as needed.

Storage:

  • For long-term storage, drain all fuel from the tank and carburetor. Run the engine until it stops to ensure all fuel is consumed.
  • Clean the entire unit thoroughly.
  • Store in a dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
