3. Setup
The ABUS 55/40 padlock is ready for immediate use out of the box. No assembly is required.
- Unlocking: Insert one of the provided keys into the keyway at the bottom of the padlock body. Turn the key clockwise until the shackle springs open.
- Locking (with key): Close the shackle by pushing it down into the padlock body. Turn the key counter-clockwise to secure the shackle. Remove the key.
- Locking (self-locking): For quick locking, simply push the shackle firmly down into the padlock body until it clicks into place. The padlock will be secured without needing to turn the key.
4. Operating Instructions
To operate your ABUS 55/40 padlock:
- Ensure the shackle is fully extended when unlocked.
- Position the padlock around the items or through the hasp you wish to secure.
- Push the shackle down firmly until it clicks, or insert the key and turn to lock.
- Always remove the key after locking to prevent loss or unauthorized access.

5. Maintenance

- Lubrication: If the key becomes difficult to turn or the shackle sticks, apply a small amount of graphite powder or a specialized lock lubricant into the keyway. Avoid using oil-based lubricants as they can attract dirt and gum up the mechanism over time.
- Storage: When not in use, store the padlock in a dry environment to prevent moisture buildup, especially if exposed to harsh weather conditions.
6. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your ABUS 55/40 padlock, consider the following common solutions:
- Key is difficult to insert or turn:
- Check for any debris or foreign objects in the keyway.
- Apply a small amount of graphite powder or lock lubricant into the keyway and gently work the key in and out.
- Shackle does not open or close smoothly:
