1. Introduction

This manual provides detailed instructions for the assembly, operation, and maintenance of your Minelab GPX 5000 Metal Detector. The GPX 5000 is designed for advanced gold detection, incorporating Minelab's exclusive Multi Period Sensing (MPS), Dual Voltage Technology (DVT), and Smart Electronic Timing Alignment (SETA) technologies to enhance detection capabilities across various ground conditions.

2. Safety Information

  • Use headphones for audio output to protect hearing and clearly identify target signals.
  • Exercise caution when handling the detector, especially during assembly and transport, due to its weight and components.
  • Do not use the metal detector near pacemakers or other medical devices, as electromagnetic fields may interfere with their operation.
  • Keep the detector away from flammable materials and liquids to prevent fire hazards.
  • Ensure all connections are secure before operation.

3. Key Features

  • Advanced Technologies: Utilizes MPS, DVT, and SETA technologies for enhanced detection of small and deep gold nuggets.
  • Automatic Ground Balance: Offers automatic ground balance options for easy adaptation to diverse ground conditions.
  • Audio Adjustments: Provides customizable audio settings to optimize target signal perception for individual hearing.
  • Interference Minimization: Includes automatic and manual options to reduce electrical interference.
  • Backlight Display: Features a backlit LCD menu for visibility in all lighting conditions, day or night.
  • Battery Preservation: Adjustable timeout settings help conserve battery life.
  • Preset Search Modes: Six factory preset search modes allow for quick setup and immediate use, with options for user modification.
  • Multiple Timings: Eight distinct timings are available, each optimized for specific conditions, effectively providing the functionality of multiple detectors in one unit.

4. Setup and Assembly

Proper assembly is crucial for the optimal performance of your GPX 5000. Follow these general steps for initial setup:

  1. Attach the Search Coil: Secure the search coil to the lower shaft using the provided bolt and washers. Ensure it is firmly attached but not overtightened.
  2. Assemble the Shaft: Connect the lower, middle, and upper shaft sections. Adjust the length to a comfortable operating position.
  3. Mount the Control Box: Attach the control box to the upper shaft. Ensure it is securely fastened and positioned for easy access to controls and display.
  4. Connect Cables: Carefully connect the search coil cable to the control box. Ensure all connections are clean and dry.
  5. Install Battery: Insert the charged Lithium Ion battery into its compartment, ensuring correct polarity.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Powering On

Press and hold the power button on the control box until the display illuminates. The detector will perform a self-test. Ensure the battery is adequately charged before each use.

5.2 Ground Balance

The GPX 5000 features automatic ground balance options. To perform an automatic ground balance, hold the coil flat to the ground and press the designated ground balance button. The detector will analyze the ground mineralization and adjust its settings for optimal performance. Manual ground balance options are also available for experienced users in challenging conditions.

5.3 Search Modes and Timings

The detector offers six factory preset search modes. These modes are designed for various detecting scenarios and can be selected via the menu. Additionally, the GPX 5000 provides eight distinct timings, which alter the digital processing of the electronics. Selecting the appropriate timing for your ground conditions and target type is crucial for maximizing detection depth and sensitivity.

5.4 Audio Adjustments

Adjust the audio settings to suit your personal hearing and the ambient environment. This includes volume, threshold, and tone controls. Optimizing these settings helps in distinguishing faint target signals from ground noise.

6. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: After each use, wipe down the detector with a damp cloth to remove dirt and dust. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Battery Care: Always use the provided charger for the Lithium Ion battery. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when not in use. Do not expose the battery to extreme temperatures.
  • Storage: Store the detector in a dry, secure location, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Disassemble if storing for extended periods.
  • Cable Inspection: Regularly inspect all cables and connections for signs of wear or damage. Replace damaged components immediately.

7. Troubleshooting

  • No Power: Ensure the battery is fully charged and correctly installed. Check all power connections.
  • Erratic Signals / "Siren Noise": This can be caused by electromagnetic interference (EMI) from power lines, cell phones, or other electronic devices. Try moving to a different location, reducing sensitivity, or performing a manual frequency scan if available. Ensure proper ground balance.
  • Poor Detection Depth: Verify that the correct search mode and timing are selected for the ground conditions. Ensure the coil is properly ground balanced. Check for any damage to the search coil or cable.
  • No Audio: Check headphone connection and volume settings. Ensure the detector's internal speaker (if applicable) is not muted.
