Operating Instructions
Polar Pattern Selection
The CK-40 features a switch on the microphone body to select between three polar patterns for each capsule: Cardioid, Omnidirectional, and Figure-8. These patterns allow for versatile sound capture depending on your recording needs.
- Cardioid: Captures sound primarily from the front, rejecting sound from the sides and rear. Ideal for isolating a sound source.
- Omnidirectional: Captures sound equally from all directions. Suitable for capturing ambient room sound or multiple sources around the microphone.
- Figure-8: Captures sound equally from the front and rear, rejecting sound from the sides. Useful for capturing two sources facing each other or for Mid-Side (M-S) stereo recording.
Capsule Rotation for Stereo Techniques
The upper capsule of the CK-40 can be rotated up to 90 degrees relative to the lower capsule. This unique feature enables various stereo recording techniques:
- X-Y Coincident: By setting both capsules to Cardioid and rotating the upper capsule to an angle (e.g., 90 degrees total spread), you can achieve a phase-coherent stereo image.
- Blumlein Pair: Set both capsules to Figure-8 and rotate the upper capsule to 90 degrees relative to the lower. This technique provides a wide, natural stereo image with good depth.
- Mid-Side (M-S): Set the lower capsule to Cardioid (Mid) and the upper capsule to Figure-8 (Side), with the upper capsule rotated 90 degrees. This allows for post-production manipulation of the stereo width.

Gain Setting
Set the input gain on your audio interface or preamp to an appropriate level. Aim for a healthy signal without clipping (distortion). Perform a sound check with the loudest anticipated sound source to ensure proper gain staging.
Maintenance
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to clean the microphone body. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents, as they can damage the finish or internal components. Avoid touching the microphone capsules directly.
- Storage: When not in use, store the CK-40 microphone in its wooden box, inside the aluminum flight case, to protect it from dust, moisture, and physical damage.
- Environmental Conditions: Avoid exposing the microphone to extreme temperatures, high humidity, or direct sunlight for extended periods.
Troubleshooting
- No Sound Output:
- Ensure +48V phantom power is activated on both input channels of your audio interface/preamp.
- Verify all XLR cable connections are secure between the microphone, breakout box, and audio interface.
- Check that input gain levels on your audio interface are not set to minimum.
- Test with different XLR cables to rule out cable failure.
- Excessive Noise or Hum:
- Ensure all cables are properly shielded and in good condition.
- Check for ground loops. Try connecting your audio equipment to a single power outlet or using a ground lift adapter if safe to do so.
- Keep the microphone and cables away from power supplies, computer monitors, and other electronic devices that can emit electromagnetic interference.
- Verify the 12-pin cable connecting the microphone to the breakout box is fully seated and not damaged.
- Distorted Sound:
- Reduce the input gain on your audio interface/preamp. The signal may be too hot, causing clipping.
- Ensure the microphone is not placed too close to extremely loud sound sources.
