2. Safety Information
WARNING: To avoid electrical shock or damage to the meter, do not exceed the maximum input limits. Always remove test leads before opening the case for battery or fuse replacement.
- Always ensure the multimeter is set to the correct range before making a measurement.
- Do not apply voltage to the meter when the rotary switch is set to current, resistance, or diode/hFE functions.
- Be cautious when working with voltages above 30V AC RMS, 42V peak, or 60V DC. These voltages pose a shock hazard.
- Inspect test leads for damage before each use. Do not use if insulation is cracked or exposed.
- Do not operate the meter if it appears damaged or if the case is open.
- Always disconnect power to the circuit under test before connecting or disconnecting test leads for current measurements.

6. Setup
6.1. Battery Installation
The DT830B multimeter requires a 9V battery (NEDA 1604 or 6F22 type). To install or replace the battery:
- Ensure the multimeter is turned OFF and all test leads are disconnected from the input jacks.
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the unit (refer to Figure 2.1).
- Remove the screw(s) securing the cover and carefully lift it off.
- Connect the 9V battery to the battery clip, observing correct polarity.
- Place the battery into the compartment and replace the cover, securing it with the screw(s).
6.2. Connecting Test Leads
Connect the test leads to the appropriate input jacks:
- Insert the black test lead into the COM (Common) jack.
- For most measurements (voltage, resistance, diode, current up to 200mA), insert the red test lead into the VΩmA jack.
- For high current measurements (up to 10A), insert the red test lead into the 10A jack.
7. Operating Instructions
7.1. General Operation
- Power On/Off: Rotate the switch from the OFF position to any desired function to turn the meter ON. Rotate back to OFF to turn it OFF.
- Range Selection: The DT830B is a manual ranging multimeter. Select a range higher than the expected measurement value. If the value is unknown, start with the highest range and decrease it until a suitable reading is obtained. An 'OL' (Overload) or '1' on the display indicates the range is too low.
7.2. DC Voltage Measurement (DCV)
- Set the rotary switch to the desired DCV range (e.g., 20V, 200V).
- Connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the VΩmA jack.
- Connect the test leads in parallel across the component or circuit to be measured.
- Read the voltage value on the LCD display.
7.3. AC Voltage Measurement (ACV)
- Set the rotary switch to the desired ACV range (e.g., 200V, 750V).
- Connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the VΩmA jack.
- Connect the test leads in parallel across the AC source or component.
- Read the voltage value on the LCD display.
7.4. DC Current Measurement (DCA)
CAUTION: Never connect the meter in parallel with a voltage source when measuring current. This can blow the fuse or damage the meter.
- Set the rotary switch to the desired DCA range (e.g., 20mA, 200mA, 10A).
- For currents up to 200mA, connect the red test lead to the VΩmA jack. For currents up to 10A, connect the red test lead to the 10A jack. The black lead remains in COM.
- Disconnect power to the circuit. Break the circuit and connect the meter in series with the load.
- Apply power to the circuit and read the current value on the LCD display.
7.5. Resistance Measurement (Ω)
CAUTION: Ensure the circuit under test is completely de-energized before measuring resistance. Do not measure resistance on live circuits.
- Set the rotary switch to the desired Resistance range (e.g., 200Ω, 2kΩ, 2MΩ).
- Connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the VΩmA jack.
- Connect the test leads across the component whose resistance is to be measured.
- Read the resistance value on the LCD display.
7.6. Diode Test
- Set the rotary switch to the Diode symbol (▶|).
- Connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the VΩmA jack.
- Connect the red lead to the anode and the black lead to the cathode of the diode. The display will show the forward voltage drop (typically 0.5V to 0.8V for silicon diodes).
- Reverse the leads. The display should show 'OL' (open circuit) for a good diode.
7.7. Transistor (hFE) Test
- Set the rotary switch to the hFE position.
- Identify if the transistor is NPN or PNP.
- Insert the transistor leads (Emitter, Base, Collector) into the corresponding holes in the hFE socket on the multimeter.
- Read the hFE (DC current gain) value on the LCD display.
8. Maintenance
8.1. Battery Replacement
When the battery symbol appears on the LCD display, the 9V battery needs to be replaced. Follow the steps outlined in Section 6.1.
8.2. Fuse Replacement
If the meter does not function correctly on current ranges, the fuse may be blown. The DT830B uses a 0.5A/250V fuse for the mA range and an unfused 10A range. To replace the fuse:
- Ensure the multimeter is turned OFF and all test leads are disconnected.
- Remove the battery compartment cover as described in Section 6.1.
- Carefully remove the old fuse and replace it with a new fuse of the same type and rating (0.5A/250V).
- Replace the battery and the compartment cover.
8.3. Cleaning
Wipe the case with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents.
9. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No display or dim display | Dead or low battery | Replace the 9V battery. |
| 'OL' or '1' displayed | Measurement exceeds selected range; Open circuit (for resistance/current) | Select a higher range; Check test lead connections or circuit continuity. |
| Incorrect current reading | Blown fuse; Incorrect input jack used | Replace the fuse (0.5A/250V); Ensure red lead is in the correct current jack (VΩmA or 10A). |
| No reading for resistance | Circuit is live; Component is open | Ensure circuit is de-energized; Check component for breaks. |
