4. Setup and Installation
The RACO Work Cover is designed for straightforward installation. Ensure all power to the electrical box is turned off at the circuit breaker before beginning any electrical work.
Required Tools (Not Included):
- Screwdriver (appropriate for mounting screws)
- Voltage tester (to confirm power is off)
Installation Steps:
- Safety First: Turn off the power to the electrical circuit at the main breaker or fuse box. Verify that the power is off using a voltage tester.
- Prepare the Box: Ensure the electrical box is securely mounted and all wiring is properly terminated to the receptacle or switch you intend to install.
- Attach Device to Cover: Align the receptacle or switch with the opening on the RACO Work Cover. Use the provided mounting screws to secure the device to the cover. The cover's design with threaded tabs allows for a secure fit without additional nuts.
- Mount Cover to Box: Carefully position the assembled cover and device over the electrical box. Align the mounting holes on the cover with the screw holes on the electrical box.
- Secure the Cover: Insert the remaining mounting screws through the cover and into the electrical box. Tighten the screws until the cover is firmly secured to the box. Do not overtighten.
- Restore Power: Once the cover is securely installed, turn the power back on at the circuit breaker.

Once installed, it provides a secure and compliant housing for your receptacles or switches, allowing them to be safely used. There are no operational controls on the cover itself; its function is passive protection and structural support.
6. Maintenance
The RACO Work Cover requires minimal maintenance due to its durable galvanized steel construction.
- Cleaning: Periodically wipe the surface of the cover with a dry or slightly damp cloth to remove dust and dirt. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the finish.
- Inspection: Annually inspect the cover for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections. Ensure all mounting screws remain tight. If any damage is observed, replace the cover immediately.
7. Troubleshooting
Most issues related to the RACO Work Cover are installation-related. Refer to the installation section for proper procedures.
- Cover Does Not Fit:
- Ensure you have the correct size and type of work cover for your electrical box and device. This model (812C) is a square exposed work cover.
- Check for any obstructions inside or around the electrical box that might prevent the cover from seating properly.
- Screws Do Not Tighten:
- Verify that you are using the correct screws provided with the cover or appropriate replacement screws.
- Check the threads on the electrical box and the cover for damage.
- Cover Appears Loose After Installation:
- Ensure all mounting screws are tightened securely. Do not overtighten, as this can strip threads.
