1. Introduction

The Heil Sound PR-781 is a professional-quality dynamic cardioid microphone designed for amateur radio and podcasting. 2. Setup

2.1 Unpacking

Carefully remove all components from the packaging. The box contains the PR-781 microphone and a zippered padded bag for storage. The microphone is secured using a tension packaging method; gently pull one side of the packaging to release the microphone.

2.2 Mounting the Microphone

The PR-781 includes a standard mount. This mount can be removed if you intend to use the microphone with a shock mount or a different microphone stand. To remove the mount, unscrew the retaining knob. If using a shock mount, the included mount is typically not required.

2.3 Connecting the Microphone

The PR-781 features a 3-pin XLR connector. Connect a standard XLR cable (not included) from the microphone to your audio interface, mixer, or compatible transceiver. Ensure the connection is secure.

3.1 Microphone Orientation

The PR-781 is an "end-fire" microphone. This means audio is primarily acquired from the end of the microphone (the top grille), not the sides. For optimal sound quality, speak directly into the top of the microphone.

3.2 Proximity Effect

Like many dynamic microphones, the PR-781 exhibits a proximity effect. Speaking closer to the microphone will increase bass response. Experiment with distance to achieve your desired tonal balance.

3.3 Pop Filter Usage

To minimize plosive sounds (harsh 'p' and 'b' sounds) and protect the microphone element, it is recommended to use an external pop filter (not included). Position the pop filter a few inches in front of the microphone grille.

• Store the microphone in its provided padded bag when not in use to protect it from dust and physical damage.

• Poor Sound Quality / Muffled Audio:
  • Confirm that you are speaking directly into the end (top grille) of the microphone, as it is an end-fire design.
  • Check for any obstructions on the microphone grille or if the pop filter is too close.
  • Adjust microphone proximity and gain settings.
• Excessive Plosives (P-pops):
  • Ensure an external pop filter is correctly positioned between your mouth and the microphone.
  • Adjust your speaking distance from the microphone.
