1. Introduction

The TC Electronic NM-1 Nova Modulator is a versatile dual modulation effects pedal designed for guitarists. It offers a wide range of modulation effects, including chorus, flanger, phaser, tremolo, and vibrato, with independent control over two effect engines (A and B). This manual will guide you through the setup, operation, and maintenance of your device.

Controls and Connectors

The NM-1 Nova Modulator features a comprehensive set of controls for precise sound shaping. Refer to Figure 1 for visual identification of the following components:

  • Power Input: Connects to the included power adapter.
  • Input/Output Jacks: Standard 1/4-inch mono or stereo jacks for audio signal.
  • Footswitches:
    • ON/OFF Footswitch: Activates or bypasses the overall effect. Holding it allows manual/preset switching.
    • TEMPO Footswitch: Used for tap tempo input. Holding it allows calibration.
  • Effect Select Buttons (A/B): Selects the modulation type for each engine (Chorus, Tri-Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Tremolo, Vibrato).
  • Variation Buttons (+variation): Adds variations to the selected effect.
  • Control Knobs: Adjust parameters such as Speed, Depth, Feedback, Mix, and LFO Sync.
  • Display: A numerical display shows current settings or tempo.

3. Setup

3.1 Unpacking

Carefully remove the Nova Modulator from its packaging. Ensure all components are present: the pedal unit, power adapter, and this user manual.

3.2 Power Connection

Connect the supplied power adapter to the DC input jack on the rear of the Nova Modulator. Plug the adapter into a suitable power outlet. Use only the original TC Electronic power supply to prevent damage and ensure optimal performance.

3.3 Audio Connections

The Nova Modulator supports both mono and stereo operation.

  • Mono Setup: Connect your instrument to the Input L (Mono) jack. Connect the Output L (Mono) jack to your amplifier or next effect pedal.
  • Stereo Setup: Connect your instrument to the Input L (Mono) jack. If using a stereo source, connect both Input L and Input R. Connect the Output L and Output R jacks to your stereo amplifier setup or other stereo effects.

3.4 Initial Power On

Once all connections are made, ensure power is supplied. The display will illuminate, indicating the unit is ready for use.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Activating/Bypassing Effects

Press the ON/OFF footswitch to toggle the overall effect on or off. The corresponding LED will indicate the status.

4.2 Selecting Modulation Effects (Engine A & B)

The Nova Modulator features two independent modulation engines, A and B.

  • For Engine A, use the Effect A buttons to select between Chorus, Tri-Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Tremolo, or Vibrato.
  • For Engine B, use the Effect B buttons to select between Chorus, Tri-Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Tremolo, or Vibrato.
  • Press the +variation button for each engine to access alternative variations of the selected effect type.

4.3 Adjusting Parameters

Use the dedicated control knobs to fine-tune the parameters of the selected effects:

  • Speed: Controls the rate of the modulation.
  • Depth: Adjusts the intensity or range of the modulation.
  • Feedback: (For Flanger/Phaser) Controls the amount of effect signal fed back into the input.
  • Mix: Blends the dry (unaffected) signal with the wet (effected) signal.
  • LFO Sync: Synchronizes the Low-Frequency Oscillator (LFO) to the tempo.
  • Filter: Shapes the tone of the modulated signal.

4.4 Tempo Control

Tap the TEMPO footswitch two or more times to set the tempo for time-based effects. The tempo LED will flash to indicate the current tempo.

4.5 Preset Management

The Nova Modulator allows you to store and recall your favorite settings.

  • Storing a Preset: Adjust your desired settings. Hold the PRESET HOLD to store button until the display confirms the preset is saved.
  • Recalling a Preset: Briefly press the PRESET button to cycle through stored presets.
  • Manual Mode: Hold the ON/OFF footswitch to switch between manual mode (current knob settings) and preset mode.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning

To clean the unit, use a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or waxes, as these can damage the finish and internal components. Ensure the unit is powered off and disconnected from the power source before cleaning.

5.2 Storage

When not in use for extended periods, store the Nova Modulator in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. It is recommended to keep the original packaging for protection during storage or transport.

5.3 Firmware Updates

Periodically check the official TC Electronic website for any available firmware updates. Follow the instructions provided on the website for updating your device. Firmware updates can introduce new features, improve performance, or fix bugs.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Nova Modulator, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

  • No Sound:
    • Ensure the power adapter is securely connected and the unit is powered on.
    • Check all audio cables for proper connection and integrity.
    • Verify that the ON/OFF footswitch is engaged (effect LED is lit).
    • Check the Mix knob setting; if set to fully dry, no effect will be heard.
  • Effect Not Changing:
    • Ensure you are in manual mode if you expect knob changes to take immediate effect.
    • Verify that the correct effect engine (A or B) is selected for adjustment.
  • Unwanted Noise/Hum:
