Introduction
The Simran SM-500J is a versatile 500-watt step up/down voltage transformer designed for converting electrical voltage between Japanese (100V) and North American (110V/120V) power standards. This unit allows you to use 100V Japanese appliances in 110V/120V regions, and 110V/120V North American appliances in 100V Japanese regions. It features a heavy-duty design for continuous use, an ON/OFF switch, and fuse protection.
Important Safety Instructions
- Read all instructions: Before using the transformer, read and understand all safety and operating instructions.
- Indoor use only: This transformer is designed for indoor use in dry locations. Do not expose to rain or moisture.
- Ventilation: Ensure adequate ventilation around the transformer. Do not block ventilation openings.
- Correct wattage: Do not exceed the maximum rated load of 500 watts. Overloading can damage the transformer and connected appliances, and poses a fire hazard. Always check the wattage of your appliance.
- Grounding: Ensure the transformer is connected to a properly grounded outlet.
- Children and pets: Keep the transformer out of reach of children and pets.
- Unplug when not in use: Disconnect the transformer from the power outlet when not in use.
- Avoid damage: Do not operate the transformer if the cord or plug is damaged. Do not attempt to open or repair the unit yourself. Refer all servicing to qualified personnel.

Setup
- Placement: Place the transformer on a stable, flat surface in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and moisture.
- Identify Input Voltage: Determine the voltage of the wall outlet you will be plugging the transformer into (e.g., 120V in USA, 100V in Japan).
- Identify Appliance Voltage: Determine the voltage requirement of the appliance you wish to power (e.g., a 100V Japanese appliance, or a 120V North American appliance).
- Connect Appliance: Plug your appliance into the appropriate output socket on the front of the transformer. The SM-500J typically features two output sockets: one labeled 100V and another labeled 120V. Ensure your appliance is plugged into the socket that matches its voltage requirement.
- Connect Transformer to Wall Outlet: Plug the transformer's integrated power cord into the wall outlet.

Operating Instructions
- Power On: After completing the setup steps, press the ON/OFF switch located on the front of the transformer to the 'ON' position. The power indicator light (if present) should illuminate.
- Use Appliance: You can now operate your connected appliance as usual.
- Continuous Use: The SM-500J is designed for heavy-duty, continuous use within its 500-watt rated load. However, it is good practice to periodically check the transformer for excessive heat.
- Power Off: When you are finished using the appliance, turn off the appliance first, then press the ON/OFF switch on the transformer to the 'OFF' position.
- Disconnect: For extended periods of non-use, unplug the transformer from the wall outlet.
Maintenance
- Cleaning: Disconnect the transformer from power before cleaning. Use a dry, soft cloth to wipe the exterior. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents.
- Fuse Replacement: The transformer is fuse-protected. If the unit stops working, the fuse may have blown due to an overload or short circuit. To replace the fuse:
- Unplug the transformer from the wall outlet and disconnect all appliances.
- Locate the fuse holder on the front panel (refer to the product image).
- Unscrew the fuse cap counter-clockwise.
- Remove the old fuse and replace it with a new fuse of the exact same type and rating (e.g., 5A, 250V). Using an incorrect fuse can cause damage or fire.
- Screw the fuse cap back in clockwise until secure.
- Reconnect the transformer and test its operation.
Troubleshooting
- No Power / Unit Not Turning On:
- Ensure the transformer is securely plugged into a working wall outlet.
- Check the ON/OFF switch is in the 'ON' position.
- Inspect the fuse. If it is blown, replace it with a fuse of the correct rating (see Maintenance section).
- Verify the wall outlet is supplying power by testing it with another device.
- Appliance Not Working:
- Ensure the appliance is correctly plugged into the appropriate 100V or 120V output socket on the transformer.
- Confirm the appliance's wattage does not exceed the transformer's 500-watt capacity.
- Check if the appliance itself is functioning correctly by testing it directly in a compatible wall outlet (if possible).
- Transformer Overheating:
- Ensure there is adequate ventilation around the transformer.
- Verify that the total wattage of connected appliances does not exceed 500 watts.
- Disconnect the transformer and allow it to cool down before resuming use. If overheating persists, discontinue use and contact support.
