Setup and Installation

  1. Prepare the Engine: Ensure the engine is completely off and cool. Disconnect the spark plug wire for safety.
  2. Mount the Meter: Choose a suitable, secure location on your equipment, away from excessive heat or vibration. The meter can be mounted using screws or adhesive (not included, unless specified in packaging).
  3. Connect the Wire: Wrap the signal wire from the tachometer/hour meter around the spark plug wire. Typically, 5-7 wraps are sufficient to pick up the ignition pulse. Ensure the wraps are tight and secure, possibly using electrical tape or zip ties to hold them in place.
  4. Secure the Wiring: Route the wire safely, away from moving parts, hot surfaces, or pinch points. Use zip ties or clips to secure it.
  5. Reconnect Spark Plug: Reconnect the spark plug wire to the spark plug.

Note: For optimal signal reception, ensure the signal wire is wrapped directly around the insulated portion of the spark plug wire, close to the spark plug boot.

Operating Instructions

The Briggs & Stratton 19598 Digital Tachometer/Hour Meter is designed for automatic operation once installed correctly.

  • Hour Meter Function: The device automatically records total engine operating hours when the engine is running. The hour meter display will typically show continuously, even when the engine is off, to retain the accumulated time.
  • Tachometer Function: When the engine is running, the display will show the current engine RPM (revolutions per minute). The reading updates in real-time, providing immediate feedback on engine speed.
  • Display Modes: Some models may cycle between hour meter and tachometer readings or have a button to switch modes. Refer to the specific unit's display behavior.

The internal battery is sealed and not replaceable. The unit is designed to operate for its expected lifespan without battery maintenance.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the display and casing with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the plastic and display.
  • Inspection: Periodically check the signal wire and mounting for security and damage. Ensure the wire is still tightly wrapped around the spark plug wire.
  • Battery: The internal battery is not user-replaceable. The unit is designed for a long operational life. When the battery depletes, the unit will cease to function and should be replaced.
