1. Introduction and Overview

The OLYMPUS SP-810UZ is a high-performance digital camera designed for versatile photography. It features a powerful 36x optical zoom lens, covering a wide-angle 24mm to a super-telephoto 864mm equivalent. With digital zoom, it can achieve an impressive 3456mm equivalent for ultra-telephoto shots. The camera is equipped with a 14-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor and a 3.0-inch LCD screen. Advanced features like DUAL IS image stabilization and high-definition 720p movie recording ensure clear and stable results across various shooting conditions. This camera also includes a 3D photo function for creative imaging.

2. Setup

2.1. Installing the Battery and Memory Card

Before using your camera, ensure the battery is charged and a compatible memory card is inserted.

  1. Open the Battery/Card Cover: Locate the cover on the bottom of the camera and slide it open.
  2. Insert the Battery: Insert the Lithium-ion battery (approx. 40g) into the battery compartment, ensuring the correct orientation as indicated by the markings. Push until it clicks into place.
  3. Insert the Memory Card: Insert an SD card into the memory card slot with the label facing the front of the camera. Push until it clicks.
  4. Close the Cover: Close the battery/card cover securely.

2.2. Charging the Battery

The camera's Lithium-ion battery can be charged directly within the camera using the supplied USB cable.

  1. Connect the USB Cable: Connect the small end of the USB cable to the camera's USB port.
  2. Connect to Power: Connect the other end of the USB cable to a USB AC adapter (not always included) or a powered USB port on a computer.
  3. Charging Indicator: The charging indicator light on the camera will illuminate during charging and turn off when charging is complete.

2.3. Initial Settings

Upon first power-on or after a prolonged period without battery, you may need to set the date, time, and language.

  1. Power On: Press the ON/OFF button.
  2. Follow On-Screen Prompts: Use the directional pad and OK button to navigate and confirm settings for date, time, and preferred language.

3. Operating the Camera

3.1. Power On/Off

To turn the camera on or off, press the ON/OFF button located on the top of the camera.

3.2. Basic Photography

  1. Select a Shooting Mode: Rotate the mode dial to select your desired shooting mode (e.g., Auto, Program, Scene modes, 3D Photo).
  2. Zoom In/Out: Use the zoom lever around the shutter button to adjust the optical zoom (36x) or digital zoom (4x). The lens extends as you zoom in.
  3. Focus: Point the camera at your subject and gently press the shutter button halfway down. The camera will automatically focus, and the focus indicator will light up.
  4. Capture Photo: Once focused, press the shutter button fully down to take the picture.

3.3. Video Recording

The SP-810UZ can record high-definition 720p videos in MPEG-4 format.

  1. Start Recording: Press the dedicated movie recording button (often marked with a red dot) to start recording.
  2. Stop Recording: Press the movie recording button again to stop.
  3. Zoom During Video: While recording, you can use the zoom lever. Note that zooming during video recording may cause the audio to cut out temporarily during playback. It is recommended to set your desired zoom level before starting recording.

3.4. Playback

To view your captured photos and videos:

  1. Enter Playback Mode: Press the playback button (usually indicated by a triangle icon).
  2. Navigate: Use the directional pad to scroll through your images and videos.
  3. Delete Files: In playback mode, press the delete button (often indicated by a trash can icon) to remove unwanted files.

4. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your camera.

  • Cleaning the Lens and Screen: Use a soft, lint-free cloth specifically designed for optical surfaces to gently wipe the lens and LCD screen. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
  • Battery Care: Store the battery in a cool, dry place when not in use. Avoid fully discharging the battery frequently. If storing for extended periods, charge it to about 50% capacity.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the camera in a protective case to prevent dust accumulation and physical damage. Avoid exposing the camera to extreme temperatures, humidity, or direct sunlight.
