3. Sizing and Fit

Accurate measurement is crucial for ensuring a comfortable and effective fit. Follow these steps to measure your dog:

  1. Nose Length Measurement: Measure the distance from the tip of the nose to the base of the nose, just below the eyes. The tip of the nose should not touch the muzzle.
  2. Nose Circumference Measurement: Measure around the widest part of their nose, just below the eyes. Ideally, measure while they are panting to ensure enough room.

Note: Our breed size guide is based on typical breed standards. Every dog is unique, so please note that variations due to sex or crossbreeding may affect sizing. The length measurement is the most important when fitting a muzzle. If your dog is in between sizes, we recommend to size up.

4. Setup: Acclimatization

Introduce the muzzle slowly to ensure a positive association. This process helps your dog become comfortable with wearing the muzzle.

  1. Show your dog the muzzle. If they come forward to investigate it, verbally praise them and give a treat.
  2. Place a treat inside the muzzle to lure your dog's nose into the muzzle and allow them to eat the treat. Repeat this several times.
  3. Once your dog is used to the sensation, bring the straps behind its head and connect them. Keep the muzzle on for short periods, gradually increasing the duration.
  4. Always reward your dog with treats and praise while the muzzle is on.

5. Customization (Heat Shaping)

The Baskerville Ultra Muzzle can be heat-shaped for a perfect custom fit:

  1. Warm: Immerse the muzzle basket in hot tap water (approximately 170-180°F / 70-80°C) for 2 minutes.
  2. Shape: Carefully remove the muzzle from the water and shape the muzzle basket to suit your dog's unique nose shape.
  3. Cool: Place the shaped muzzle in cold water to lock the new shape in place.
  4. Fit: Check for fit on your dog. Repeat shaping as required until the fit is optimal.

7. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and hygiene of your Baskerville Ultra Muzzle:

  • Regularly inspect the muzzle for any signs of wear or damage to the straps or basket.
  • Clean the muzzle with mild soap and water. Rinse thoroughly and allow it to air dry completely before storage or next use.
  • Store the muzzle in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Baskerville Ultra Muzzle:

  • Muzzle is too tight/loose: Re-check your dog's measurements against the size chart. Utilize the heat-shaping method for a customized fit. Adjust the head straps using the slider to ensure 1-2 fingers can fit between the strap and your dog's face.
  • Dog resists wearing the muzzle: Revisit the acclimatization steps (Section 4). Ensure positive association with treats and praise. Gradually increase wear time.
  • Muzzle slips off: Ensure all straps are securely fastened and adjusted correctly. The head strap should be snug but not tight, and the optional collar attachment can provide additional security.
