1. Introduction
The Garmin eTrex 30 is a rugged and versatile handheld GPS navigator designed for outdoor enthusiasts. Note: A microSD card is not included for optional mapping of detailed roads and must be purchased separately if desired.
3. Setup
3.1 Battery Installation
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the device.
- Twist the D-ring counter-clockwise to unlock and remove the cover.
- Insert two AA batteries, observing the polarity markings (+ and -) inside the compartment.
- Replace the battery cover and twist the D-ring clockwise to secure it.

3.2 Initial Power-On
- Press and hold the Power button (located on the right side of the device) until the screen turns on.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to select your language and other initial settings.

4. Operating the Device
4.1 Navigation and Menus
The eTrex 30 features a joystick for menu navigation and selection. Use the joystick to scroll through options and press it to select. The 'Menu' button (left side) accesses context-sensitive options or the main menu. The 'Back' button (right side) returns to the previous screen.
4.2 Key Features
- Worldwide Basemap: View your current location on a preloaded worldwide basemap with shaded relief.
- 3-Axis Electronic Compass: Provides accurate heading information even when standing still or holding the device at an angle.
- Barometric Altimeter: Tracks changes in pressure to pinpoint your precise altitude and can even plot barometric pressure over time to help you keep an eye on changing weather conditions.
- Paperless Geocaching: Download GPX files directly to your device and view key information such as location, terrain, difficulty, hints, and descriptions.

5. Maintenance
5.1 General Care
- Clean the device with a cloth dampened with a mild detergent solution.
- Avoid chemical cleaners and solvents that can damage plastic components.
- The device is waterproof; however, ensure the battery cover is securely fastened before exposure to water.
5.2 Battery Life
The eTrex 30 operates on two AA batteries, providing up to 25 hours of battery life. To maximize battery life, reduce backlight brightness and disable unnecessary features when not in use.
6. Troubleshooting
6.1 Device Not Powering On
- Ensure batteries are correctly installed with proper polarity.
- Replace batteries with fresh ones.
- Verify the battery compartment cover is securely closed.
