3. Setup
3.1 Battery Installation
- Locate the battery cover on the back of the device.
- Turn the D-ring fastener counter-clockwise to unlock the cover.
- Remove the battery cover.
- Insert two AA batteries, observing the polarity markings (+ and -).
- Replace the battery cover and turn the D-ring fastener clockwise to secure it. Ensure the cover is properly sealed to maintain water resistance.
Note: AA batteries are not included with the device. Use high-quality alkaline or NiMH rechargeable batteries for optimal performance.
3.2 Powering On/Off
- To power on the device, press and hold the Light button on the right side of the device.
- To power off the device, press and hold the Light button until the power off prompt appears, then select Off.
3.3 Initial Setup
Upon first power-on, the device will guide you through initial setup steps, including:
- Language Selection: Choose your preferred language.
- Time Zone: Set your current time zone.
- Unit Format: Select preferred units for distance, speed, and elevation.
4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Basic Navigation and Main Menu
The eTrex 20 is operated using the joystick and side buttons. The main menu provides access to all device functions.
- Use the Joystick to scroll through menu options and move the map cursor. Press the joystick to select an item.
- The Menu button (left side) opens the options menu for the current page or returns to the previous page.
- The Back button (right side) returns to the previous page.
- The Light button (right side) controls the backlight and powers the device on/off.

4.2 Map Screen
The Map screen displays your current location, tracks, waypoints, and routes. Use the joystick to pan the map. Press the Zoom In and Zoom Out buttons (up/down arrows on the left side) to adjust the map scale.

4.3 Waypoints, Tracks, and Routes
- Waypoints: Mark and save specific locations. From the main menu, select Mark Waypoint to save your current location.
- Tracks: Record your path as you travel. The device automatically records a track log. You can save, view, and navigate saved tracks.
- Routes: Create a sequence of waypoints to follow a planned path. Routes can be created on the device or transferred from a computer using Garmin BaseCamp software.
4.4 Geocaching
The eTrex 20 supports paperless geocaching. You can download GPX files directly to the device, which contain geocache details, hints, and descriptions.
- Connect the eTrex 20 to your computer using a USB cable.
- Download GPX files from geocaching websites (e.g., geocaching.com).
- Transfer the GPX files to the Garmin/GPX folder on your device.
- Disconnect the device. From the main menu, select Geocaches to view and navigate to downloaded geocaches.
4.5 Connecting to a Computer
To transfer data such as maps, waypoints, tracks, and geocaches, connect your eTrex 20 to a computer using a USB cable. The device will appear as a mass storage device. Garmin's free BaseCamp software is recommended for managing data and maps.

5.1 Cleaning the Device
- Clean the device casing with a cloth dampened with a mild detergent solution.
- For the screen, use a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
