Setup
1. Battery Installation
The Canon AF35M requires two (2) AA batteries for operation. To install the batteries:
- Locate the battery compartment cover, typically on the bottom or side of the camera body.
- Slide or unlatch the cover to open the compartment.
- Insert two fresh AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
- Close the battery compartment cover securely.
2. Film Loading
To load a roll of 35mm film:
- Locate the film door latch on the side of the camera (refer to Figure 2). Slide the latch downwards to open the camera back.
- Insert a 35mm film cartridge into the film chamber on the left side.
- Pull the film leader across to the take-up spool on the right side, ensuring it engages with the spool's teeth.
- Close the camera back firmly until it latches.
- Advance the film by pressing the shutter button until the frame counter displays '1'. This ensures the exposed film leader is wound onto the take-up spool.

3. Setting Film Speed (ISO)
Manually set the film speed (ISO) according to the film loaded. The camera supports ISO settings from 25 to 400. Locate the ISO dial, usually on the lens barrel or top plate, and rotate it to match the ISO rating of your film.
Operating Instructions
1. Taking a Photograph
The Canon AF35M is an autofocus point-and-shoot camera. To take a picture:
- Hold the camera steady and compose your shot through the viewfinder.
- Gently press the shutter button halfway down to activate the autofocus and exposure system. A light in the viewfinder may indicate focus lock or flash readiness.
- Press the shutter button fully down to take the picture. The camera will automatically advance the film to the next frame.
2. Using the Built-in Flash
The camera features a built-in pop-up flash for low-light conditions. To use the flash:
- Locate the flash activation button or switch, typically on the top or front of the camera.
- Activate the flash. The flash unit will pop up.
- Wait approximately 5-7 seconds for the flash to recharge. A ready light will illuminate when the flash is prepared to fire.
- Take your photograph as usual.
3. Electronic Self-Timer
The electronic self-timer allows for a delayed shutter release, useful for self-portraits or group photos. To use the self-timer:
- Locate the self-timer button or switch, usually on the front or top of the camera.
- Activate the self-timer. An indicator light or sound will typically begin.
- Press the shutter button. The camera will delay taking the picture for a set period (e.g., 10 seconds) before releasing the shutter.
4. Rewinding Film
Once all frames on the film roll have been exposed, the film must be rewound back into its cartridge. The camera back (Figure 2) includes a reminder: "Rewind the film immediately after shooting all frames."
- Locate the film rewind button or lever, typically on the bottom or top of the camera.
- Press and hold the rewind button, or turn the rewind crank/lever in the indicated direction until you feel the tension release, signifying the film is fully rewound into the cartridge.
- Open the camera back and remove the film cartridge.
Maintenance
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and performance of your camera.
- Cleaning the Lens: Use a soft, lint-free cloth or lens brush to gently remove dust and smudges from the lens surface. Avoid touching the lens with your fingers.
- Cleaning the Camera Body: Wipe the camera body with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, a slightly damp cloth can be used, but ensure no moisture enters the camera.
- Battery Care: Remove batteries if the camera will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage and corrosion.
- Storage: Store the camera in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Use a protective case to prevent scratches and impacts.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Canon AF35M, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Camera does not power on. | Dead or incorrectly installed batteries. | Replace batteries with fresh AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity. |
| Film does not advance. | Film not properly loaded or engaged with take-up spool. | Open camera back in a dark room, re-seat film, and ensure leader is engaged. Close back and advance. |
| Flash does not fire. | Flash not charged or batteries low. | Wait for the flash ready light to illuminate. If it doesn't, replace batteries. |
| Photos are blurry. | Camera shake or subject too close/far for autofocus. | Hold camera steady. Ensure subject is within the camera's focusing range. Use flash in low light. |
