4. Setup and Installation
4.1 Pre-Installation Checklist
- Verify Bulb Compatibility: Ensure your bulbs are dimmable LED, CFL, Halogen, or Incandescent.
- Tools Required: Flathead screwdriver, Phillips head screwdriver, wire strippers, electrical tape (optional).
- Power Requirements: The dimmer supports up to 150W of dimmable LED/CFL or 600W of incandescent/halogen bulbs.
4.2 Wiring Instructions
The Lutron Toggler LED+ Dimmer Switch is designed for easy installation and does not require a neutral wire. It can be used in single-pole (one location controls lights) or 3-way (two locations control lights) applications.
- Turn off power: Locate the circuit breaker or fuse that controls the light switch you are replacing and turn it OFF. Verify power is off by attempting to turn the light on.
- Remove existing switch: Unscrew and carefully pull the old switch out of the wall box. Disconnect the wires from the old switch.
- Identify Wires:
- Ground Wire: Typically green or bare copper. Connect this to the green ground wire on the dimmer.
- Hot/Load Wires: For single-pole, you will have two hot/load wires. For 3-way, you will have two traveler wires and one common wire. The dimmer has two black wires and one red wire.
- Connect Wires:
- Single-Pole Installation: Connect one black dimmer wire to the incoming hot wire and the other black dimmer wire to the load wire (going to the light fixture). Connect the green ground wire from the dimmer to the bare copper or green ground wire in the wall box. The red wire on the dimmer will not be used; cap it with a wire connector.
- 3-Way Installation: Connect one black dimmer wire to the common wire (usually darker or marked differently on the old switch). Connect the red dimmer wire to one traveler wire and the remaining black dimmer wire to the other traveler wire. Connect the green ground wire from the dimmer to the bare copper or green ground wire in the wall box.
- Secure Connections: Use wire connectors to secure all connections. Ensure no bare wire is exposed.
- Mount the Dimmer: Carefully push the wired dimmer into the wall box. Secure it with the provided screws.
- Install Wallplate: Attach your coordinating wallplate (sold separately).
- Restore Power: Turn the power back ON at the circuit breaker.

5.1 Basic Operation
- Toggle Switch: Use the large toggle switch to turn your lights ON or OFF. When turned ON, the lights will return to your last set dimming level.

5.2 Adjusting the Dimming Range (Trim Wheel)
For optimal performance and to prevent flickering or premature bulb turn-off at low levels, your dimmer features an adjustable trim wheel. This allows you to set the minimum light level for your specific bulbs.
- Access the Trim Wheel: The trim wheel is located on the side of the dimmer body, behind the wallplate. You may need to temporarily remove the wallplate to access it.
- Adjust Minimum Level: With the lights on and dimmed to their lowest setting using the front slider, use a small screwdriver to adjust the trim wheel. Turn the wheel clockwise to increase the minimum light level (if lights are flickering or turning off) or counter-clockwise to decrease it (if you desire a lower minimum).
- Test and Fine-tune: Adjust until you achieve stable, flicker-free dimming at the lowest desired light level.

6. Maintenance
Your Lutron Toggler LED+ Dimmer Switch requires minimal maintenance.
- Cleaning: To clean the dimmer and wallplate, wipe with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or chemical sprays, as these can damage the finish or internal components.
- No User-Serviceable Parts: There are no user-serviceable parts inside the dimmer. Do not attempt to disassemble or repair the unit.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Lights do not turn ON or OFF. | Power is off at the breaker; incorrect wiring; loose connections; bulb failure. | Check circuit breaker; verify wiring connections; ensure bulbs are functional. |
| Lights do not dim or dim poorly. | Non-dimmable bulbs; trim wheel set incorrectly; incompatible bulbs. | Ensure bulbs are dimmable; adjust the trim wheel (see Section 5.2); consult Lutron's LED compatibility tool for recommended bulbs. |
| Lights flicker or turn off at low dimming levels. | Trim wheel set too low; incompatible bulbs; loose connections. | Adjust the trim wheel to a higher minimum setting (see Section 5.2); replace with compatible dimmable bulbs; check wiring. |
| Dimmer is warm to the touch. | Normal operation. | It is normal for dimmers to feel warm during operation. If it becomes excessively hot or emits smoke, turn off power immediately and contact a qualified electrician. |
