3. Setup

3.1 Battery Installation

The Nikon F3 requires two product-specific batteries (not included) to power the light meter and electronic shutter functions. Without batteries, the camera can only operate at a mechanical shutter speed of 1/60 sec.

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the bottom of the camera body (refer to Figure 4).
  2. Use a coin or similar tool to unscrew the battery compartment cover.
  3. Insert two fresh batteries, ensuring correct polarity as indicated inside the compartment.
  4. Replace the battery compartment cover and tighten it securely.

3.2 Lens Mounting

The Nikon F3 uses the Nikon F bayonet mount system.

  1. Align the red dot on the lens with the red dot on the camera body's lens mount.
  2. Insert the lens into the mount and rotate it clockwise until it clicks into place.
  3. To remove the lens, press the lens release button on the camera body and rotate the lens counter-clockwise.

3.3 Film Loading

The Nikon F3 uses standard 35mm film.

  1. Open the camera back by pulling up the film rewind crank.
  2. Place the film cartridge into the film chamber on the left side.
  3. Pull the film leader across to the take-up spool on the right and insert it into one of the slots.
  4. Advance the film slightly using the film advance lever to ensure it catches on the take-up spool.
  5. Close the camera back firmly.
  6. Advance the film two frames, pressing the shutter release each time, until the frame counter shows '1'. The film rewind crank should rotate as you advance the film, indicating proper loading.

4. Operating the Camera

4.1 Shutter Operation

The Nikon F3 features an electromagnetic shutter-release with an electronically controlled horizontal-travel titanium focal-plane shutter.

  • Shutter Release Button: Lightly depress the shutter release button halfway to activate the meter. The meter remains on for 16 seconds after release.
  • Shutter Speeds: Automatic shutter speed selection ranges from 8 seconds to 1/2000 second. Manual selection is also available for the 8 - 1/2000 second range, plus 'B' (Bulb) and 'T' (Time) settings.
  • Mechanical Release: If the power source is exhausted, exposures can be made at 1/60 second via a mechanical-release knob.

4.2 Exposure Control

The F3 offers both aperture-priority automatic exposure and full manual exposure control.

  • Aperture-Priority Auto (A): Set the desired aperture on your lens, and the camera will automatically select the appropriate shutter speed.
  • Manual (M): Manually set both the aperture on your lens and the shutter speed using the shutter speed dial on the camera body.

4.3 Focusing

The Nikon F3 is a manual focus camera. Focusing is achieved by rotating the focusing ring on your attached lens until the subject appears sharp in the viewfinder.

4.4 Metering

The F3 utilizes a Center Weighted metering system.

  • The meter is activated when the shutter release button is depressed slightly.
  • The display remains indicated for 16 seconds after the button is released.

5. Maintenance

Proper care and maintenance will ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Nikon F3.

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean the camera body. For the lens and viewfinder, use specialized lens cleaning solutions and cloths. Avoid touching optical surfaces with bare hands.
  • Storage: Store the camera in a dry, dust-free environment, away from extreme temperatures and humidity. It is advisable to remove batteries during long periods of storage to prevent leakage.
  • Handling: Always handle the camera with care. Avoid dropping or subjecting it to strong impacts.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Nikon F3, consider the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • Camera not powering on/meter not working: Check if the batteries are correctly installed and are fresh. The F3 requires two product-specific batteries.
  • Shutter not firing: Ensure the film is properly loaded and advanced. If batteries are dead, the camera will only fire at 1/60 sec mechanically.
  • Film advance lever stuck: Check for any obstructions in the film path or if the film has reached the end of the roll.
  • Light leaks: Inspect the film door seals for wear or damage.

For persistent issues, it is recommended to consult a qualified camera repair technician.
