1. Unpacking

2. Battery Installation

The TP2844R requires one 9V (6F22) battery for operation. To install or replace the battery:

  1. Ensure the multimeter is turned OFF and disconnect all test leads.
  2. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the unit.
  3. Loosen the screw(s) securing the cover and remove it.
  4. Connect a new 9V battery to the battery clip, observing correct polarity.
  5. Place the battery into the compartment and replace the cover, securing it with the screw(s).

3. Connecting Test Leads

For most measurements, connect the test leads as follows:

  • Insert the black test lead into the COM (common) jack.
  • Insert the red test lead into the VΩHz jack for voltage, resistance, frequency, capacitance, and diode/continuity measurements.
  • For current measurements, insert the red test lead into the mAµA jack (for currents up to 400mA) or the 10A jack (for currents up to 10A).

Operating Instructions

General Operation

  • Power On/Off: Rotate the function switch from OFF to any desired measurement function to turn the multimeter ON. Rotate it back to OFF to power it down.
  • Auto-ranging: The TP2844R is an auto-ranging multimeter, meaning it automatically selects the appropriate measurement range. The RANGE button can be used to manually select a range if desired.

Measurement Functions

Follow these steps for specific measurements:

  1. DC Voltage (V=):
    • Set the rotary switch to the V= position.
    • Connect the red test lead to the positive side of the circuit and the black test lead to the negative side.
    • Read the voltage value on the LCD.
  2. AC Voltage (V~):
    • Set the rotary switch to the V~ position.
    • Connect the test leads across the AC voltage source.
    • Read the voltage value on the LCD.
  3. DC Current (A=, mA=, µA=):
    • WARNING: Never measure current in parallel with a voltage source. Always connect the multimeter in series with the load.
    • Set the rotary switch to the appropriate A=, mA=, or µA= position.
    • Connect the red test lead to the 10A or mAµA jack, and the black test lead to the COM jack.
    • Open the circuit where current is to be measured and connect the multimeter in series.
    • Read the current value on the LCD.
  4. AC Current (A~, mA~, µA~):
    • Follow the same safety precautions as for DC current.
    • Set the rotary switch to the appropriate A~, mA~, or µA~ position.
    • Connect the red test lead to the 10A or mAµA jack, and the black test lead to the COM jack.
    • Open the circuit and connect the multimeter in series.
    • Read the current value on the LCD.
  5. Resistance (Ω):
    • Ensure the circuit is de-energized and all capacitors are discharged.
    • Set the rotary switch to the Ω position.
    • Connect the test leads across the component to be measured.
    • Read the resistance value on the LCD.
  6. Capacitance (F):
    • Ensure the capacitor is fully discharged before measurement.
    • Set the rotary switch to the F position.
    • Connect the test leads across the capacitor.
    • Read the capacitance value on the LCD.
  7. Frequency (Hz):
    • Set the rotary switch to the Hz position.
    • Connect the test leads across the signal source.
    • Read the frequency value on the LCD.
  8. Diode Test (->|):
    • Ensure the diode is disconnected from the circuit.
    • Set the rotary switch to the ->| position.
    • Connect the red test lead to the anode and the black test lead to the cathode. A forward voltage drop will be displayed.
    • Reverse the leads. An 'OL' (Overload) reading indicates a good diode.
  9. Continuity Test (Buzzer icon):
    • Ensure the circuit is de-energized.
    • Set the rotary switch to the Buzzer icon position.
    • Connect the test leads across the component or circuit path.
    • A continuous beep indicates continuity (low resistance).

Special Functions

  • REL (Relative Value): Press the REL button to store the current reading as a reference. Subsequent measurements will display the difference from this reference value.
  • MAX/MIN: Press the MAX/MIN button to capture the maximum and minimum readings during a measurement session. Press again to cycle between MAX, MIN, and current readings.
  • HOLD (Data Hold): Press the HOLD button to freeze the current reading on the display. Press again to release.
  • Auto Power-Off: The multimeter automatically powers off after approximately 15 minutes of inactivity to conserve battery life. To disable this feature, hold down the SELECT button while turning the multimeter ON.

Maintenance

Battery Replacement

When the battery symbol appears on the LCD, the 9V battery needs to be replaced. Follow the steps outlined in the "Battery Installation" section under Setup.

Fuse Replacement

If the multimeter fails to measure current, the fuse may be blown. To replace the fuse:

  1. Ensure the multimeter is turned OFF and disconnect all test leads.
  2. Open the battery compartment cover as described for battery replacement.
  3. Carefully remove the old fuse(s).
  4. Replace with new fuses of the correct type and rating:
    • For mA/µA input: 500mA/250V MAX fast-acting fuse.
    • For 10A input: 10A/250V MAX fast-acting fuse.
  5. Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it.

Cleaning

Wipe the case with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Ensure the multimeter is completely dry before use.

Troubleshooting

  • No Display: Check the 9V battery. Ensure it is properly installed and has sufficient charge.
  • 'OL' (Overload) Reading: The measured value exceeds the selected range. If in auto-ranging mode, it exceeds the maximum range of the multimeter. Ensure the correct function and input jacks are selected.
  • Incorrect Current Reading: Check the fuse for the current input being used (mA/µA or 10A). Ensure the test leads are connected to the correct current input jacks.
  • Inaccurate Readings: Ensure test leads are making good contact. Verify the battery is not low. Avoid strong electromagnetic fields.
