This manual provides detailed instructions for the setup, operation, and maintenance of your Onkyo TX-8050 Network Stereo Receiver. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the receiver to ensure proper and safe operation. Keep this manual for future reference.
1. Setup
1.1 Unpacking and Placement
Carefully remove the receiver from its packaging. Place the receiver on a stable, level surface with adequate ventilation to prevent overheating. Avoid placing it near heat sources or in direct sunlight. Ensure there is sufficient space around the unit for airflow.
1.2 Rear Panel Connections Overview

Refer to the diagram above for the location of each connection port when connecting your components.
1.3 Speaker Connections
Connect your speakers to the SPEAKERS A or SPEAKERS B terminals on the rear panel. Ensure correct polarity (red to red / + to + and black to black / - to -) for each speaker. The receiver is designed for speakers with an impedance of 8 Ohms. Using speakers with lower impedance may cause damage to the receiver.
1.4 Audio/Video Component Connections
Connect your audio and video sources (e.g., CD player, DVD player, game console, TV) to the corresponding analog (RCA) or digital (optical/coaxial) input jacks. For digital audio, use either the OPTICAL or COAXIAL inputs. Ensure that the input selected on the receiver matches the connected component.
1.5 Network Connection
For network functionality, connect an Ethernet cable from your router to the ETHERNET port on the receiver's rear panel. Alternatively, for wireless connectivity, an optional Onkyo UWF-1 Wireless LAN adapter can be connected to the USB port.
1.6 iPod/iPhone Direct Digital Connection
Connect your iPod or iPhone to the FRONT-PANEL USB PORT for direct digital audio playback. This connection charges your device and ensures high-quality audio transmission by bypassing the device's internal DAC.
1.7 Phono Input
Connect your turntable to the dedicated PHONO INPUT. This input is specifically designed for turntables with a magnetic cartridge. If your turntable has a ceramic cartridge or a built-in pre-amplifier, use a standard analog audio input instead.
1.8 Zone 2 Pre-Outs
To send a stereo audio signal to a second room, connect an external amplifier and speakers to the ZONE 2 PRE OUT RCA jacks. You can play the same audio source as the main zone or a different source in Zone 2, depending on your configuration.
2. Operating Instructions
2.1 Power On/Off
Press the POWER button on the front panel or the remote control to turn the receiver on or off. The power indicator will illuminate when the unit is on.
2.2 Input Selection
Use the INPUT SELECTOR buttons on the front panel or the corresponding source buttons (e.g., CD, TUNER, NET, USB) on the remote control to switch between connected audio sources. The selected input will be displayed on the receiver's front panel.
2.3 Volume Control
Adjust the volume using the large VOLUME knob on the front panel or the VOLUME +/- buttons on the remote control. The volume level will be displayed digitally on the receiver's screen.
2.4 Network Features
Access internet radio stations and audio files from your PC or network storage device via the NET input. The receiver supports DLNA 1.5 for streaming from Windows 7 platforms. Ensure your network connection is active for these features.
Remote Apps: Download the official Onkyo Remote App for iPod touch/iPhone or Android from your device's app store. These apps allow you to control input source selection, adjust settings, and (for Android devices) stream music directly from your portable device over your wireless network.
2.5 USB Playback
Connect a USB flash drive or an iPod/iPhone to the front USB port. Use the receiver's controls or remote to navigate and play audio files. The receiver incorporates Advanced Music Optimizer technology to enhance the quality of compressed audio signals during playback.
2.6 AM/FM Tuner
Select the TUNER input to listen to AM or FM radio. Use the tuning controls to find stations. The receiver allows for up to 40 AM/FM presets for quick access to your favorite stations.
2.7 Remote Control Overview

3. Maintenance
3.1 Cleaning
Wipe the receiver's exterior with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, waxes, or solvents, as these can damage the finish. Ensure the unit is powered off and unplugged before cleaning.
3.2 Ventilation
Ensure that the ventilation openings on the top and sides of the receiver are not blocked by other components, cloths, or dust. Proper airflow is crucial to prevent overheating and ensure long-term performance and reliability of the unit.
4. Troubleshooting
4.1 No Power
- Check if the power cord is securely plugged into the wall outlet and the receiver.
- Ensure the power outlet is functional by testing it with another device.
4.2 No Sound
- Verify all speaker connections and ensure correct polarity.
- Check the input source selection to ensure it matches the connected component.
- Ensure the volume is not muted or set too low.
- Confirm that the correct speaker output (A or B) is selected.
4.3 Network Connectivity Issues
- Ensure the Ethernet cable is properly connected or the wireless adapter is installed and configured.
- Check your router's status and ensure it is broadcasting a signal.
- If using Wi-Fi, ensure the receiver is within range and the network password is correct.
- Consider checking for and applying any available firmware updates for the receiver.
4.4 iPod/iPhone Not Recognized
- Ensure your device is connected to the front USB port.
- Some older iPod models may have limited compatibility.
- Try restarting your device and reconnecting it.
4.5 AM Radio Static
- The supplied AM loop antenna may require optimal positioning for clear reception.
- Try relocating the antenna away from other electronic devices that may cause interference.
4.6 Overheating
- Ensure adequate ventilation around the receiver. Do not stack other components directly on top of it.
- If the receiver feels excessively hot, power it off and allow it to cool before resuming use.
