Safety Information
Please read all safety warnings and instructions carefully before operating the unit. Failure to do so may result in injury or damage to the unit.
- Electrical Safety: Ensure the unit is plugged into a properly grounded outlet. Do not operate with a damaged power cord or plug.
- Hot Surfaces: The unit and HotPacs will be extremely hot. Always use tongs or insulated gloves when handling HotPacs.
- Water Level: Maintain the water level above the heating elements at all times to prevent damage to the unit. Use distilled water to prevent mineral buildup.
- Supervision: Do not leave the unit unattended during initial heat-up or if there are any unusual sounds or smells.
- Placement: Place the unit on a stable, level surface away from flammable materials. Ensure adequate ventilation.
- Children and Pets: Keep the unit out of reach of children and pets.
- Maintenance: Disconnect power before performing any maintenance or cleaning.
Setup
- Unpacking: Carefully remove the Hydrocollator SS-2 unit from its packaging. Inspect for any shipping damage.
- Placement: Position the unit on a firm, level surface. Ensure there is sufficient space around the unit for air circulation.
- Fill with Water: Open the lid and fill the tank with distilled water until the water level is approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) below the top edge of the tank, or just above the heating elements. Do not overfill.
- Insert HotPacs: Place the HotPacs into the unit. Ensure they are fully submerged in water.
- Connect Power: Plug the power cord into a grounded electrical outlet.
- Initial Heat-Up: Turn the unit ON. Allow approximately 2-3 hours for the water and HotPacs to reach the optimal therapeutic temperature (typically 160-165°F / 71-74°C). The thermostat is factory-set and generally does not require adjustment.
Operating Instructions
- Pre-heat: Ensure the unit has reached its operating temperature.
- Retrieve HotPac: Using the provided tongs or insulated gloves, carefully remove a heated HotPac from the unit. Allow excess water to drip back into the tank.
- Wrap HotPac: Always wrap the HotPac in several layers of toweling or a specialized HotPac cover before applying it to the patient's skin. Never apply a bare HotPac directly to skin.
- Application: Apply the wrapped HotPac to the treatment area. Monitor the patient's skin for any signs of excessive heat or discomfort.
- Return HotPac: After use, return the HotPac to the unit for reheating. It typically takes 20-30 minutes for a HotPac to reheat to full temperature.
Maintenance
- Daily: Check water level and add distilled water as needed to keep HotPacs fully submerged and heating elements covered.
- Weekly (or as needed):
- Drain and Clean: Disconnect the unit from power. Drain the water from the tank. Clean the interior of the tank with a mild detergent and a soft brush or cloth. Rinse thoroughly.
- Refill: Refill the tank with fresh distilled water.
- Inspect HotPacs: Inspect HotPacs for wear and tear. Replace any damaged or worn HotPacs.
- Descaling: If mineral deposits (scale) build up, use a commercial descaling solution designed for stainless steel appliances, following the product's instructions. Rinse thoroughly after descaling.
- Exterior Cleaning: Wipe the exterior of the unit with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Unit not heating | No power; thermostat issue; heating element failure | Check power cord and outlet. Ensure unit is ON. If problem persists, contact customer support. |
| Water level dropping quickly | Evaporation; leak | This is normal due to evaporation; add distilled water daily. If excessive, check for leaks and contact support. |
| Excessive mineral buildup (scale) | Using tap water; infrequent cleaning | Use only distilled water. Perform regular draining and cleaning. Use descaling solution if buildup is significant. |
| HotPacs not getting hot enough | Insufficient heat-up time; too many HotPacs; thermostat issue | Allow adequate time for reheating. Ensure HotPacs are fully submerged. Contact support if temperature remains low. |
