2. Product Overview

The Whirlpool WHEERM membrane is a crucial component of your reverse osmosis water filtration system. It functions by applying high pressure to pre-filtered water, forcing it through a semipermeable membrane. This process effectively separates dissolved contaminants, leaving behind cleaner water. The filtered water is then stored in a tank before being dispensed through your faucet.

Key features of the WHEERM Replacement Membrane include:

  • NSF Certified Contaminant Removal: Certified to reduce up to 15 individual contaminants commonly found in home water, such as copper, cysts, lead, sodium, and chloride.
  • Improved Water Taste: Cleans water by removing elements that cause distasteful odors and flavors.
  • Long Life: Designed to last up to 2 years, depending on water conditions.
  • Easy Change Cartridge Design: UltraEase Filter Replacement system allows for membrane changes in seconds without needing to shut off the water supply.

3. Setup and Installation

Proper installation is essential for the optimal performance of your Whirlpool Reverse Osmosis system. Please review all steps and safety guidelines in your system's installation and operation manual before beginning. Installation steps may vary based on your plumbing setup. Consult local plumbing codes.

Installation Video Guide

Video 1: An official Whirlpool installation video demonstrating the step-by-step process for setting up a Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration System. This video covers connecting to the cold water supply, installing the drain adapter, mounting the faucet, and connecting the tubing.

General Installation Steps (Refer to your system's manual for specific details):

  1. Prepare the Water Supply: Close the cold water shut-off valve and turn on the cold water faucet to ensure no water is flowing. Disconnect the existing cold water line from the shut-off valve.
  2. Install Water Supply Fitting: Hand-tighten the water supply fitting to the cold water shut-off valve.
  3. Install Drain Adapter: Disassemble the sink drain pipe between the sink P-trap and the sink tailpiece. Clean the tailpiece to ensure a leak-tight fit. Use the ferrule and nut to install the drain adapter directly onto the sink tailpiece. Assemble the drain tubing connector to the drain adapter and turn the connector about 45 degrees. Tighten the nut securely. Reassemble the P-trap to the drain adapter and other drain pipe fittings. Tighten all connections, but do not overtighten plastic connections.
  4. Mount the Faucet: Determine the best location for the dedicated filtered water faucet. If a usable hole is not available (e.g., for a sprayer or soap dispenser), a new 1-1/4 inch diameter hole will need to be drilled. Ensure you have the correct drill bit for your countertop material or consult a professional. Mount the faucet base to the sink or countertop, ensuring it's flush. Slide the toggle bolts through and tighten the screws to secure the faucet base.
  5. Connect Faucet Tubing: Feed the black and blue tubing attached to the faucet body through the mounting hole. Route the loose end of the 1/4-inch red tube through the mounting hole to the faucet. Cut the tube square and to length, then insert it all the way onto the 1/4-inch faucet barb fitting. Move the faucet down onto the base and turn it a quarter clockwise to attach the faucet to the base.
  6. Install Battery for Reminder Light: Loosen the screw on the right side of the faucet base to access the battery housing. Place the battery into the holder. This battery powers the reminder light for filter changes. When installed, the light will flash six times and turn off. Reinstall the battery housing and tighten the mounting screw.
  7. Connect System Tubing: Use the green tubing to connect the water supply fitting to the system by pushing it into the green collet. To connect the faucet to the system, push the blue tubing into the blue collet of the system. Find the black tube attached to the faucet and route the loose end to the black collet fitting on the sink drain adapter. Cut the black tube square to the length needed, routing it as straight as possible without loops, dips, or kinks.
  8. Connect Storage Tank: Insert one end of the yellow tube into the filter system. Route the other end to the fitting on top of the storage tank. Wrap Teflon tape to the threads on the nipple at the top of the tank. Slowly hand-tighten the tubing connector on the tank nipple 7 to 8 turns, being careful not to cross-thread or overtighten. Slide the tubing nut onto the yellow tube with the threads facing the tube end. Insert the yellow tube into the tubing connector and tighten the tubing nut.
  9. Position Storage Tank: Place the storage unit in the desired location. It can be placed upright or on its side.
  10. Final Check: Test the pressure by turning the water back on and ensure there are no leaks. It may take several hours to fill the storage tank and create maximum water flow.

4. Operating Instructions

Once installed, your Whirlpool Reverse Osmosis system operates automatically to provide filtered water. When you open the dedicated faucet, water flows from the storage tank through the final filter and out the faucet. As water is drawn, the system will automatically refill the storage tank.

For initial use or after prolonged periods of inactivity, it is recommended to flush the system by running the faucet for several minutes until the water flows steadily and any air is purged from the lines.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance, particularly timely filter and membrane replacement, is crucial to ensure your system continues to provide high-quality water. The WHEERM membrane has a lifespan of up to 2 years, though this can vary based on the quality of your incoming water. Pre-filters and post-filters typically require replacement every 6 months.

Filter Change Reminder

Your system's dedicated faucet base includes a reminder light. When the yellow light on your faucet base starts blinking, it indicates that it's time to change your filters. This ensures you maintain optimal water quality.

Membrane and Filter Replacement Steps (UltraEase Design):

The UltraEase Filter & Membrane Replacement system simplifies the process, allowing changes without shutting off your water supply.

  1. Remove Old Membrane/Filter: Simply turn the membrane or filter a quarter turn to the left (counter-clockwise) to release and remove it.
  2. Install New Membrane/Filter: Insert the new membrane or filter and turn it a quarter turn to the right (clockwise) until it clicks securely into place.

6. Troubleshooting

This section provides general guidance for common issues. For detailed troubleshooting, refer to your complete system's instruction manual or contact customer support.

  • Low Water Flow: Check if the storage tank is full. If not, allow several hours for it to fill. Ensure all shut-off valves are fully open. Filters or membrane may be clogged and require replacement.
  • Leaking: Carefully inspect all connections for tightness. Ensure O-rings and seals are properly seated. Do not overtighten plastic connections.
  • Poor Water Taste/Odor: This indicates that filters or the membrane may be exhausted and require replacement.
  • Filter Reminder Light Not Working: Check the battery in the faucet base and replace if necessary.
