Eaton OS310U-W-K Motion Sensor Switch User Manual

Model: OS310U-W-K

1. Introduction

The Eaton OS310U-W-K is a motion-activated occupancy sensor wall switch designed to automatically control lighting based on room occupancy. This device enhances energy efficiency by turning lights on when a person enters a room and off after a selectable time delay once the room is vacated. It is compatible with a wide range of lighting loads, including incandescent, magnetic low voltage (MLV), electronic low voltage (ELV), fluorescent, compact fluorescent (CFL), and LED lights, as well as motors up to 1/6 HP.

This manual provides detailed instructions for the safe installation, operation, and maintenance of your Eaton OS310U-W-K motion sensor switch.

2. Safety Information

WARNING: To avoid fire, shock, or death; turn off power at the circuit breaker or fuse box and test that the power is off before wiring. All wiring must be performed in accordance with national and local electrical codes.

  • Always disconnect power at the circuit breaker before installation or servicing.
  • A neutral wire is required for the installation of this device. Verify your switch box wiring includes a neutral wire before proceeding.
  • This device is intended for indoor use only.
  • Do not use with dimmable fluorescent fixtures unless specifically rated for occupancy sensor control.
  • If you are unsure about any part of the installation process, consult a qualified electrician.

4. Setup and Installation

The Eaton OS310U-W-K is designed to fit into a standard wall box and replaces a traditional light or fan switch. Installation requires a neutral wire. If your existing switch box does not have a neutral wire, consult an electrician.

4.1 Wiring Requirements

  • Required Wires: Ground, Hot (Line), Load, and Neutral.
  • 3-Way Configuration: For 3-way operation, an additional traveler wire is needed. Note that 3-way wiring for this sensor switch differs from standard 3-way switches; the wiring is effectively in parallel. Refer to the detailed wiring diagram provided with your product packaging for specific instructions.
  • The device comes with 6-inch pre-stripped #14 AWG wire leads for connection.

4.2 Installation Steps

  1. Turn Off Power: At the circuit breaker or fuse box, turn off the power to the switch location. Verify power is off using a voltage tester.
  2. Remove Old Switch: Carefully remove the existing wall plate and switch from the wall box. Disconnect the wires from the old switch, noting their connections.
  3. Identify Wires: Identify the Line (Hot), Load, Neutral, and Ground wires in the wall box. The neutral wire is typically white.
  4. Connect New Switch: Connect the wires from the Eaton OS310U-W-K switch to the corresponding wires in the wall box using wire nuts. Ensure all connections are secure.
    • Connect the green wire from the sensor to the bare copper or green ground wire in the wall box.
    • Connect the black wire from the sensor to the Line (Hot) wire.
    • Connect the red wire from the sensor to the Load wire (to the light fixture).
    • Connect the white wire from the sensor to the Neutral wire.
    • For 3-way installations, refer to the specific wiring diagram provided with the product.
  5. Mount Switch: Carefully fold the wires into the wall box and secure the switch to the wall box with the provided screws.
  6. Install Wall Plate: Attach the decorator mid-size wall plate.
  7. Restore Power: Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Automatic Operation (Occupancy Mode)

In this mode, the lights will automatically turn on when motion is detected and turn off after the set time delay once the room is vacant. This is the default operating mode.

5.2 Manual-On / Auto-Off Mode (Vacancy Mode)

To switch to manual-on/auto-off mode, press and hold the main switch button for a few seconds until the indicator light changes. In this mode, you must manually turn on the lights by pressing the switch button. The lights will then automatically turn off after the set time delay when no motion is detected.

5.3 Bypass Feature (Traditional Switch Mode)

The bypass feature allows the sensor to function as a traditional manual on/manual off switch, ignoring motion detection. Consult the product's detailed instructions for how to activate and deactivate this mode, typically involving a specific press-and-hold sequence.

5.4 Nightlight Function

The integrated LED nightlight can be turned on or off and its brightness adjusted. Press and hold the nightlight button (if separate) or a specific section of the main button to dim the nightlight. The nightlight provides a locator light in the dark.

5.5 LED Indicator

A green LED on the switch indicates the load status (lights on/off). It also serves as a locator light in dark conditions and blinks to signal motion detection.

6. Configuration Settings

The Eaton OS310U-W-K offers several adjustable settings to customize its operation. These settings are typically accessed by removing the wall plate and adjusting small dials or switches on the device itself.

6.1 Time Delay Adjustment

The time delay determines how long the lights remain on after the last detected motion. Available settings include:

  • 5 seconds (Test Mode)
  • 5 minutes (Factory Default)
  • 15 minutes
  • 30 minutes

6.2 Ambient Light Override

This setting allows you to prevent the lights from turning on automatically if there is sufficient natural light in the room. This feature helps conserve energy by ensuring lights are only activated when truly needed.

6.3 Walk-in-Delay

The walk-in-delay feature intelligently shortens the time delay if motion is detected only briefly, further optimizing energy savings.

7. Maintenance

The Eaton OS310U-W-K motion sensor switch requires minimal maintenance.

  • Cleaning: To clean the device, gently wipe the surface with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the finish or internal components.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect the switch and wall plate for any signs of damage or loose connections. If any issues are found, turn off power at the circuit breaker and address them or consult a qualified electrician.
