2. Setup

2.1 Unpacking and Inspection

Upon receiving your Fluke 113 multimeter, carefully inspect the packaging for any signs of damage. Remove the multimeter and its accessories from the box. The package should contain the UTILITY MULTIMETER and a holster with built-in probe holders.

2.2 Battery Installation

The Fluke 113 multimeter uses a 9V battery. A battery is typically installed from the factory. To access the battery compartment, refer to the maintenance section for instructions on opening the meter. Ensure the battery is correctly oriented according to the polarity markings.

2.3 Connecting Test Leads

Insert the test leads into the appropriate input jacks on the multimeter. For most measurements, the black lead connects to the COM (common) jack and the red lead connects to the VΩHz jack.

3. Operating Instructions

The Fluke 113 offers both manual and auto-ranging capabilities for user flexibility. Always ensure the meter is set to the correct function and range before making any measurements.

3.1 Powering On/Off

Rotate the central dial to the desired function to power on the meter. To power off, rotate the dial to the OFF position. The meter has a sleep mode to maximize battery life.

3.2 Measuring AC/DC Voltage

  1. Connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the VΩHz jack.
  2. Rotate the dial to the V~ (AC Voltage) or V- (DC Voltage) position. The meter supports auto-ranging.
  3. Touch the test probes to the circuit points where you want to measure voltage.
  4. Read the voltage value on the digital display. The 6000-count resolution, 3-1/2 digit digital display is backlit for readability in low-light conditions.

3.3 Measuring Resistance

  1. Ensure the circuit is de-energized before measuring resistance.
  2. Connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the VΩHz jack.
  3. Rotate the dial to the Ω (Resistance) position.
  4. Touch the test probes across the component or circuit path you wish to measure.
  5. Read the resistance value on the display.

3.4 Measuring Capacitance

The Fluke 113 measures capacitance up to 9,999 microfarads.

  1. Ensure the capacitor is fully discharged before measuring.
  2. Connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the VΩHz jack.
  3. Rotate the dial to the CAP (Capacitance) position.
  4. Touch the test probes to the capacitor terminals.
  5. Read the capacitance value on the display.

3.5 Diode Check and Continuity

The meter has a diode check for testing general-purpose germanium, silicon, and power diodes. It also features a continuity beeper which provides audible detection of resistance by turning on at less than 25 ohms and off at 250 ohms. It is also able to simultaneously check for voltage and continuity.

  1. Connect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the VΩHz jack.
  2. Rotate the dial to the Diode/Continuity position.
  3. For diode check, place the probes across the diode. The display will show the forward voltage drop.
  4. For continuity, place the probes across the circuit path. An audible beep indicates continuity.

3.6 Max/Min and Hold Functions

  • Max/Min: Press the MIN MAX button to record signal fluctuations. The meter will display the maximum, minimum, and average readings.
  • Hold: Press the HOLD button to freeze the current measurement on the display for easier reading.

4. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and accuracy of your Fluke 113 multimeter.

4.1 Cleaning

Wipe the case with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Keep the input jacks free of dirt and moisture.

4.2 Battery Replacement

The meter uses a 9V battery with a battery life of approximately 300 hours without backlight. When the battery indicator appears on the display, replace the battery promptly.

  1. Turn the meter off and disconnect all test leads from the meter.
  2. Remove the screw from the battery compartment cover on the back of the meter.
  3. Lift off the cover.
  4. Remove the old battery and replace it with a new 9V battery, observing polarity.
  5. Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it with the screw.

4.3 Fuse Replacement

If the meter fails to measure current, the fuse may need replacement. Refer to the full user guide for detailed instructions on fuse replacement, as this procedure requires opening the meter case.

5. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your Fluke 113 multimeter.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Meter does not power on.Dead or incorrectly installed battery.Check battery polarity or replace the 9V battery.
"OL" (Overload) displayed.Measurement exceeds the selected range or meter's maximum capability.Select a higher range (if in manual ranging mode) or ensure the measurement is within the meter's specifications.
Inaccurate readings.Dirty test leads, low battery, or incorrect function/range selection.Clean test leads, replace battery, or verify function/range setting.
Continuity beeper not working.Circuit resistance is too high (above 250 ohms).Verify the circuit path is continuous and resistance is below 25 ohms for audible beep.
