It is constructed from heavy-duty cast steel and finished with a gloss black powder coat for corrosion resistance.

Key Features:

  • Adjustable Design: Mounts onto a vertical channel bracket (CURT channels #48610 and #48650 recommended, sold separately) for easy height adjustment, ensuring level towing.
  • Secure Latching: Features a sleeve-lock latch mechanism that fully encompasses the trailer ball for maximum security.
  • Compatibility: Designed to fit a standard 2-inch diameter trailer ball.
  • High Strength: Constructed from heavy-duty cast steel with a gross trailer weight capacity of 7,000 lbs. and a tongue weight capacity of 1,050 lbs.

2. Setup and Installation

The CURT 25319 coupler is designed for channel mounting. It requires a compatible vertical channel bracket (such as CURT channels #48610 or #48650, sold separately) and appropriate mounting hardware (bolts, washers, and nuts, which are typically not included with the coupler and must be acquired separately).

Installation Steps:

  1. Prepare Mounting Surface: Ensure the vertical channel bracket on your trailer is clean and free from obstructions.
  2. Position Coupler: Align the coupler with the desired height setting on the channel bracket. The channel-mount design allows for easy vertical adjustment.
  3. Secure with Hardware: Insert two appropriate bolts through the coupler and the channel bracket. Secure them with washers and nuts. It is crucial to use high-grade hardware suitable for towing applications. Tighten all fasteners to the manufacturer's recommended torque specifications. The two attachment bolts provide stability and reduce rattle.
  4. Verify Fit: After installation, ensure the coupler is securely attached to the channel and there is no excessive movement.

3. Operating Instructions

Proper operation of the sleeve-lock coupler is essential for safe towing.

Coupling the Trailer:

  1. Prepare Coupler: Ensure the sleeve-lock latch is in the open position, allowing the coupler head to receive the trailer ball.
  2. Align Trailer and Vehicle: Carefully back the tow vehicle to align the trailer ball directly beneath the coupler.
  3. Lower Coupler: Lower the trailer onto the trailer ball. The coupler should fully seat over the ball.
  4. Engage Latch: Once the coupler is seated, push the sleeve-lock latch down and forward until it locks into place. Verify that the latch is fully engaged and secure.
  5. Safety Pin: Insert a safety pin or coupler lock through the designated hole in the latch mechanism to prevent accidental disengagement.
  6. Test Connection: Use the trailer jack to slightly raise the trailer tongue. If the coupler remains securely attached to the trailer ball, the connection is successful. If it lifts off, the coupler is not properly engaged, and the process must be repeated.

Uncoupling the Trailer:

  1. Park Safely: Ensure the vehicle and trailer are on level ground and the vehicle's parking brake is engaged.
  2. Remove Safety Pin: Remove the safety pin or coupler lock from the latch mechanism.
  3. Release Latch: Lift the sleeve-lock latch to disengage it from the trailer ball.
  4. Raise Trailer: Use the trailer jack to raise the trailer tongue until the coupler clears the trailer ball.
  5. Move Vehicle: Carefully drive the tow vehicle away from the trailer.

4. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your CURT coupler.

  • Inspection: Before each use, visually inspect the coupler for any signs of wear, damage, cracks, or corrosion. Check that all bolts are tight and secure.
  • Lubrication: Periodically lubricate the moving parts of the latch mechanism with a light grease or spray lubricant to ensure smooth operation and prevent rust.
  • Cleaning: Keep the coupler clean from dirt, grime, and road salt. The gloss black powder coat provides corrosion resistance, but regular cleaning will help maintain its integrity.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the coupler in a dry environment to further protect it from the elements.

5. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues that may arise with your coupler.

  • Coupler Not Latching:
    • Ensure the trailer ball is the correct 2-inch diameter.
    • Verify the coupler is fully seated over the trailer ball.
    • Check for any obstructions or debris within the latch mechanism. Clean and lubricate if necessary.
    • Inspect the latch mechanism for damage or wear.
  • Excessive Play/Rattle:
    • Ensure all mounting bolts securing the coupler to the channel bracket are tightened to specifications.
    • Verify the trailer ball is the correct size and not worn.
    • Check for wear in the coupler head or on the trailer ball.
  • Corrosion:
    • While the coupler has a powder coat finish, prolonged exposure to harsh conditions can lead to corrosion. Clean regularly and apply a rust-inhibiting spray if surface rust appears.
    • For severe corrosion affecting structural integrity, replace the coupler.
