  1. Install Your iOS Device: Place your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch into the included iPad stand. Ensure it is securely seated.
  2. Connect the iDJ Live: Connect the 30-pin dock connector cable from the iDJ Live controller to your iOS device. The iDJ Live draws power directly from your iOS device, so ensure your device is sufficiently charged.

4. Operating Instructions

The iDJ Live controller is designed to mimic a traditional two-deck DJ setup. Familiarize yourself with its controls for effective mixing.

4.1. Basic Controls Overview

  • Performance Platters: Two large, touch-sensitive platters for scratching and cueing tracks.
  • Crossfader: A central slider to smoothly transition between Deck A and Deck B.
  • Buttons and Knobs: Various controls for playback, cue points, effects, and navigation, depending on the specific DJ app used.
  • Bass and Treble Controls: Dedicated knobs for fine-tuning the equalization of each deck.

4.2. Mixing and Scratching

  1. Loading Tracks: Use your DJ application to load music tracks onto Deck A and Deck B. The iDJ Live's browse button (if supported by the app) can assist with music selection.
  2. Cueing: Use the performance platters to find the desired starting point of a track. The custom audio cable allows for pre-cueing in your headphones.
  3. Mixing: Adjust the volume of each deck and use the crossfader to blend between tracks. Utilize the bass and treble controls to shape the sound.
  4. Scratching: Engage the scratch function within your DJ app and use the touch-sensitive platters for scratching effects. For precise control, ensure the "hamster switch" setting (if present in your app) is configured correctly (usually off for standard scratching).

4.3. Touchless Navigation

The iDJ Live is designed to minimize the need to touch your iOS device's screen during a performance, allowing you to focus on the mix. Many functions, such as track browsing and loading, can be controlled directly from the unit's buttons and knobs, depending on your DJ software's integration.

5. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your iDJ Live controller, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the surface of the controller. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the controller in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Handling: Handle the unit with care. Avoid dropping it or subjecting it to strong impacts.
  • Cable Management: Ensure cables are not kinked or strained, which can lead to damage over time.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Numark iDJ Live, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

  • Controller Not Responding / No Power:
    • Ensure your iOS device is fully charged, as the iDJ Live draws power from it.
    • Verify the 30-pin dock connector is securely plugged into your iOS device.
    • Check for compatibility issues with your iOS version. Some older controllers may not function correctly with newer iOS updates (e.g., iOS 6 and later for some early models). Consult your DJ app's support for specific compatibility.
    • Try restarting your iOS device and the DJ application.
  • Audio Lag or Latency:
    • Ensure you are using a direct wired connection for audio output. Bluetooth audio can introduce significant latency.
    • Close other applications running in the background on your iOS device to free up processing power.
  • Scratch Platter Too Sensitive or Unresponsive:
    • Check the settings within your DJ application. There may be sensitivity adjustments or options to enable/disable scratch mode.
  • Crossfader or Sliders Behaving Incorrectly ("Hamster Switch" Issue):
    • Many DJ applications have a "hamster switch" or "reverse fader" option. Ensure this setting is turned OFF in your DJ app if you desire standard fader behavior.
