Key Features

  • Handheld pocket refractometer for measuring cutting oil 0.0 to 70.0, with a temperature range between 10.0 to 75.0 degrees C.
  • Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC) for immediate and accurate calibration readings, regardless of ambient temperature.
  • LED-illuminated digital display, with an External Light Interference (ELI) feature to alert of outside light interference.
  • Rectangular palm-sized shape (109 x 55 x 31mm), with prism housed in circular sample well.
  • Durable, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) resin body, with Ingress-Protection (IP)-65 rating for protection against dust and water jets.

Package Contents

The following items are included in the product package:

  • Atago 4502 PAL-102S Refractometer
  • Rigid plastic storage case
  • AAA batteries (2)

Setup

Battery Installation

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the device.
  2. Open the compartment cover.
  3. Insert two (2) AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
  4. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

Initial Calibration

The unit is factory-calibrated, but can be re-calibrated with tap water for optimal accuracy.

  1. Ensure the prism surface is clean and dry.
  2. Apply a small amount (approximately 0.3ml) of clean tap water to the prism surface.
  3. Press the ZERO button. The display will show '0.0' indicating successful calibration.
  4. Wipe the tap water from the prism surface.

Operating Instructions

Taking a Measurement

  1. Ensure the prism surface is clean and dry.
  2. Apply a small amount (approximately 0.3ml) of the cutting oil sample onto the prism surface. The sloped shape of the sample well helps prevent spills.
  3. Wait briefly for the sample temperature to conform to the prism temperature.
  4. Press the START button.
  5. The measurement result (cutting oil concentration) and temperature will be displayed within three seconds.

Understanding Readings

The primary reading on the display indicates the cutting oil concentration in the range of 0.0 to 70.0. The unit also displays the sample temperature in degrees Celsius.

If the External Light Interference (ELI) feature detects too much ambient light (e.g., direct sunlight), an alert may appear. Move to a less brightly lit area for accurate measurement.

Maintenance

Cleaning

  • After each use, clean the sample well and prism surface thoroughly with a soft, damp cloth.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the prism or body.
  • Ensure the device is dry before storing.

Storage

  • Store the refractometer in its rigid plastic storage case with the foam cut-out insert to protect it from impacts.
  • Keep the device in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Remove batteries if the device will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Inaccurate ReadingsPrism not clean; improper calibration; sample not settled; too much ambient light (ELI alert).Clean prism thoroughly; recalibrate with tap water; allow sample to reach prism temperature; move to a shaded area.
Display Not WorkingLow or dead batteries; incorrect battery installation.Replace batteries; check battery polarity.
No Reading After STARTInsufficient sample volume; air bubbles in sample.Ensure 0.3ml sample is applied; gently remove air bubbles.
