Setup
1. Battery Installation
- Locate the battery compartment on the back of the unit.
- Open the compartment cover.
- Insert two AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
- Close the battery compartment cover securely.
2. Initial Calibration
The PAL-87S is factory-calibrated. For routine calibration or if accuracy is in question, you can calibrate the unit using tap water.
- Ensure the prism surface is clean and dry.
- Apply a small amount of tap water (approximately 0.3ml) to the prism surface.
- Press the ZERO button. The display should show "0.0" or a value very close to it.
- Wipe the water off the prism with a soft, clean cloth.
Operating Instructions
1. Sample Preparation
Ensure your wine sample is free of large particles and at a temperature within the operating range (10 to 40 degrees C). The metal sides of the sample well are designed to help the sample quickly conform to the prism temperature for accurate readings.
2. Taking a Measurement
- Clean the prism surface thoroughly with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Apply approximately 0.3ml of the wine sample onto the prism surface. The sloped shape of the sample well helps with pouring and prevents spills.
- Press the START button.
- The measurement will be displayed within three seconds, showing either the Oe (Oechsler) or Brix percentage and the temperature.
- After measurement, immediately clean the prism and sample well with water and wipe dry.
3. Understanding the Display
- The main numerical display shows the measurement in either Oe (Oechsler) or Brix, depending on the selected mode.
- A smaller display indicates the sample temperature.
- ELI (External Light Interference) Alert: If the ELI icon appears, it indicates that too much external light (e.g., direct sunlight) is interfering with the measurement. Move to a less brightly lit area or shield the prism from direct light and re-measure.
Maintenance
Cleaning the Prism
Always clean the prism immediately after each use. Use a soft, lint-free cloth and clean water. Do not use abrasive materials or harsh chemicals, as they can damage the prism surface. The unit is IP-65 rated, meaning it is protected against dust and low-pressure water jets, allowing for easy rinsing of the prism area.
Storage
When not in use, store the refractometer in its rigid plastic storage case in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Remove batteries if storing for extended periods to prevent leakage.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No display or unit does not turn on. | Dead or incorrectly installed batteries. | Check battery polarity. Replace batteries with new AAA batteries. |
| Inaccurate readings. | Prism is dirty; unit needs calibration; sample temperature is outside range; ELI interference. | Clean prism thoroughly. Perform calibration with tap water. Ensure sample is within 10-40°C. Move to a less brightly lit area if ELI alert appears. |
| ELI (External Light Interference) alert appears. | Too much ambient light (e.g., direct sunlight) on the prism. | Move the unit to a shaded area or shield the prism from direct light. Re-measure. |
| Sample spills from well. | Too much sample applied. | Apply only 0.3ml of sample. The sloped design helps, but overfilling can still occur. |
