It features a digital LCD screen showing a Brix reading of "13.5" and a temperature of "20.3°C", along with a battery indicator. Below the screen are two circular buttons: a "START" button and a "ZERO" button. At the top, there is a metallic sample stage where liquid samples are placed for measurement. The text "Pocket REFRACTOMETER PAL-1" is visible at the bottom of the label.

2. Key Features

3. What's in the Box?

Upon opening the package, please verify that all the following items are included:

4. Setup

4.1. Battery Installation

  1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the unit.
  2. Slide or unclip the cover to open the compartment.
  3. Insert two (2) AAA alkaline batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
  4. Replace the battery compartment cover securely.

4.2. Initial Calibration (Zero Setting)

For accurate measurements, the PAL-1 must be calibrated with water before first use and periodically thereafter.

  1. Ensure the prism surface is clean and dry. Use a soft, lint-free cloth.
  2. Place a few drops of distilled or deionized water onto the prism surface. Ensure the water covers the entire surface.
  3. Press the ZERO button. The display will show "0.0%" Brix.
  4. Wipe the water off the prism surface with a clean, soft cloth. The device is now calibrated and ready for use.

Note: Calibration should be performed at room temperature. The device features Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC) for sample measurements.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1. Taking a Measurement

  1. Ensure the prism surface is clean and dry.
  2. Place a few drops (approximately 0.3 mL) of the sample liquid onto the prism surface. Ensure the sample covers the entire surface.
  3. Close the daylight plate (if applicable, though not explicitly mentioned for PAL-1, it's standard for refractometers).
  4. Press the START button.
  5. The Brix value and temperature will be displayed on the LCD screen within 3 seconds.
  6. After measurement, immediately clean the prism surface with water and a soft cloth to prevent sample residue from drying.

5.2. Understanding the Display

The LCD screen provides the following information:

5.3. Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC)

The PAL-1 is equipped with ATC, which automatically adjusts the Brix reading to a standard reference temperature (typically 20°C) to ensure accuracy, even if the sample temperature varies between 10°C and 100°C.

5.4. External Light Interference (ELI) Warning

If the device detects strong external light interfering with the measurement, an ELI warning message will appear on the display. To resolve this, move the refractometer to a location with less direct light or shield the prism from strong light sources.

6. Maintenance

6.1. Cleaning the Prism

Always clean the prism immediately after each use to prevent sample residue from drying and affecting future measurements. Use a soft, lint-free cloth or tissue moistened with water. Do not use abrasive materials or harsh chemicals.

6.2. Washing the Unit

The PAL-1 has an IP65 rating, meaning it is protected against dust ingress and low-pressure water jets. It can be washed under running water. Ensure the battery compartment cover is securely closed before washing. Do not immerse the unit in water.

6.3. Battery Replacement

When the battery indicator shows low power, replace both AAA batteries as described in Section 4.1. Remove batteries if the unit will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.

7. Troubleshooting
