1. Introduction
This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the operation and maintenance of your Nikon FE2 SLR film camera. The Nikon FE2 is a classic 35mm film camera known for its robust build and advanced features for its time, offering precise manual control and aperture-priority auto exposure. This manual specifically covers the camera body; lenses and other accessories are sold separately.
2. Product Overview
The Nikon FE2 is a sophisticated 35mm single-lens reflex (SLR) camera designed for photographers who prefer manual control and the unique qualities of film photography. It features a durable chrome body and a Nikon F mount, compatible with a wide range of Nikkor lenses.

3. Setup
3.1 Battery Installation
The Nikon FE2 requires batteries to power its light meter and electronic shutter. The camera uses two 1.5V S76 or LR44 type alkaline batteries. The battery compartment is typically located on the bottom of the camera body.
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the bottom of the camera.
- Use a coin or a flat tool to unscrew the cover counter-clockwise.
- Insert two new batteries, ensuring the correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
- Replace the battery compartment cover and tighten it clockwise until secure.
3.2 Lens Attachment
The Nikon FE2 uses the Nikon F mount. To attach a compatible lens:
- Remove the body cap from the camera and the rear cap from the lens.
- Align the red dot (or white dot, depending on lens type) on the lens barrel with the corresponding mounting index dot on the camera body.
- Insert the lens into the camera's lens mount and rotate it clockwise until it clicks into place. Do not force the lens.
- To detach the lens, press the lens release button on the camera body and rotate the lens counter-clockwise until it stops, then remove it.
3.3 Film Loading
The Nikon FE2 uses 35mm film. Load film in subdued light to prevent accidental exposure.
- Open the camera back by pulling up the film rewind knob until the back pops open.
- Insert a new 35mm film cassette into the film chamber on the left side, pushing it down until it seats properly.
- Pull the film leader across to the take-up spool on the right side. Insert the tip of the leader into one of the slots on the take-up spool.
- Advance the film slightly using the film advance lever to ensure the film sprockets engage the perforations.
- Close the camera back firmly until it clicks shut.
- Advance the film two frames (by pressing the shutter button and advancing the lever) to wind past the exposed leader. The frame counter should show '1'.
4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Setting Film Speed (ISO)
The ISO setting tells the camera's meter the sensitivity of the film loaded. This is crucial for accurate exposure.
- Lift and rotate the outer ring of the shutter speed dial to set the ISO (ASA) to match your film's rating (e.g., ISO 100, 200, 400).
4.2 Exposure Modes
The Nikon FE2 offers both Aperture-Priority Auto (A) and Manual (M) exposure modes.
- Aperture-Priority Auto (A): Set the shutter speed dial to 'A'. You select the aperture on the lens, and the camera automatically sets the correct shutter speed for proper exposure based on its center-weighted metering system.
- Manual (M): Set the shutter speed dial to a specific speed (e.g., 1/125s, 1/500s). You manually set both the shutter speed and the aperture on the lens. The viewfinder will display the recommended shutter speed from the meter, allowing you to adjust for correct exposure. Shutter speeds range from 1/4000 seconds (the fastest) down to slower speeds, including Bulb (B) for extended exposures, depending on the setting.
4.3 Focusing
The Nikon FE2 features manual focus. Look through the optical viewfinder and rotate the focusing ring on your lens until the image appears sharp. The viewfinder typically includes a split-image rangefinder and microprism collar to aid in precise focusing.
4.4 Taking a Picture
- Ensure film is loaded and the camera is powered on (by pulling the film advance lever slightly out from the body).
- Set your desired exposure mode (A or M) and aperture.
- Look through the viewfinder and compose your shot.
- Manually focus the lens.
- Press the shutter button gently to take the picture.
- Advance the film using the film advance lever to the next frame.
4.5 Film Rewinding
Once all frames on the film roll have been exposed, you must rewind the film back into its cassette before opening the camera back.
- Press the film rewind release button located on the bottom of the camera.
- Fold out the crank on the film rewind knob and turn it clockwise until you feel the tension release, indicating the film is fully rewound into the cassette.
- Pull up the film rewind knob to open the camera back.
- Remove the film cassette.
5. Maintenance
- Cleaning the Camera Body: Use a soft, lint-free cloth to wipe down the camera body. For stubborn dirt, slightly dampen the cloth with water or a mild camera cleaning solution. Avoid harsh chemicals.
- Cleaning the Lens Mount: Keep the lens mount free of dust and debris. Use a blower brush to remove loose particles. Avoid touching the internal mirror or focusing screen.
- Battery Care: Remove batteries if the camera will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage and corrosion.
- Storage: Store the camera in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Use desiccant packets in humid environments to prevent mold growth.
- Professional Servicing: For internal cleaning or repairs, it is recommended to seek professional camera servicing.
6. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Camera does not power on / Shutter does not fire. | Dead or incorrectly installed batteries. | Check battery polarity; replace with fresh batteries. |
| Film advance lever is stuck. | Film is at the end of the roll; film rewind button not pressed. | Rewind the film. Ensure the film rewind release button is pressed before rewinding. |
| Images are consistently over/under exposed. | Incorrect ISO setting; metering issue; incorrect manual settings. | Verify ISO matches film. In manual mode, adjust shutter speed/aperture according to meter. Consider professional servicing if meter is faulty. |
| Film door will not open. | Film rewind knob not pulled up fully. | Ensure the film rewind knob is pulled up completely until the latch releases. |
