3. Setup and Installation
3.1 Attaching the Lens
- Ensure your camera is turned off.
- Align the mounting index (red dot) on the lens with the corresponding index on your Canon DSLR camera body.
- Insert the lens into the camera mount and rotate it clockwise until it clicks into place.
3.2 Detaching the Lens
- Ensure your camera is turned off.
- While pressing the lens release button on the camera body, rotate the lens counter-clockwise until it stops.
- Carefully remove the lens from the camera body.
3.3 Attaching the Lens Hood
The included flower-shaped lens hood helps to prevent stray light from entering the lens, reducing flare and ghosting. Align the hood with the front of the lens and rotate it until it locks into position.
3.4 Filter Installation
This lens uses 62mm filters. To attach a filter, carefully screw it onto the filter threads at the front of the lens. Ensure it is securely fastened but do not overtighten.
4. Operating the Lens
4.1 Autofocus (PZD - Piezo Drive)
The PZD (Piezo Drive) is an ultrasonic autofocus motor that provides faster, quieter, and more precise focusing. To use autofocus, set the AF/MF switch on the lens barrel to 'AF'. The camera will then control the focus automatically.
4.2 Manual Focus
For manual focusing, set the AF/MF switch on the lens barrel to 'MF'. Rotate the focus ring to achieve desired sharpness. The Internal Focusing (IF) system ensures the lens length does not change during focusing, and allows for a closer minimum focusing distance.
4.3 Zooming
To adjust the focal length, rotate the zoom ring on the lens barrel. The 18-270mm range (28-419mm equivalent on APS-C) allows for wide-angle to telephoto shots.
4.4 Vibration Compensation (VC)
The Vibration Compensation (VC) system helps to reduce blur caused by camera shake, especially useful in low light conditions or when shooting at longer focal lengths. Activate the VC function using the dedicated switch on the lens barrel. The VC mechanism employs a three-coil system for smooth and quiet operation.
4.5 Zoom Lock (ZL)
The Zoom Lock (ZL) switch prevents the lens barrel from extending unintentionally when carrying the camera, ensuring the lens remains compact and secure.
5. Maintenance and Care
5.1 Cleaning the Lens
- Use a lens blower to remove dust and loose particles from the lens surface.
- For smudges or fingerprints, use a clean microfiber lens cloth and a small amount of lens cleaning solution. Apply the solution to the cloth, not directly to the lens.
- Clean the lens body with a soft, dry cloth.
5.2 Storage
- Always attach the front and rear lens caps when the lens is not in use.
- Store the lens in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- If storing for an extended period, consider using a desiccant to prevent mold and mildew.
6. Troubleshooting
- Blurry Images: Ensure the lens is properly focused. Check if Vibration Compensation (VC) is enabled in low light or at long focal lengths. Verify camera settings (shutter speed, aperture, ISO).
- Autofocus Not Working: Confirm the AF/MF switch on the lens is set to 'AF'. Check camera settings for autofocus mode. Ensure there is sufficient light and contrast for the autofocus system to operate effectively.
- Lens Not Mounting: Ensure the lens is correctly aligned with the camera's mounting index and rotated until it clicks. Do not force the lens.
