Preparation:

  1. Turn Off Water Supply: Ensure the hot and cold water supplies to the faucet are completely turned off. Open the faucet handles to drain any residual water and relieve pressure.
  2. Remove Aerator (Optional but Recommended): Carefully unscrew the aerator from the tip of the spout. This prevents hard water deposits dislodged during the repair from clogging the aerator screen. Clean the screen if necessary.

Disassembly:

  1. Access Under Sink: Go under the sink to access the faucet connections.
  2. Remove Faucet Handle: Locate the screw holding the faucet handle in place. This may be a hidden Allen screw or a Phillips screw under a decorative cap (often marked 'H' or 'C'). Remove the screw and lift off the handle.
  3. Remove Bonnet Nut: Using large pliers or an adjustable wrench, carefully unscrew the bonnet nut. This is the silver nut that holds the valve in place. Old nuts may be corroded and difficult to remove; the kit includes new ones, so minor damage to the old nut is acceptable.
  4. Remove Old Valve and Components: Once the bonnet nut is removed, lift out the old stem cartridge. Use paper towels to absorb any remaining water in the valve housing. Inside the housing, you will find a rubber washer and a spring. Remove both the old washer and spring.
  5. Clean Housing: Clean any hard water deposits or debris from the valve housing.

Re-assembly:

  1. Install New Washer and Spring: Place the new spring into the housing with the wider end facing down. Gently press the new rubber washer into place over the narrow end of the spring.
  2. Insert New Stem Cartridge: Carefully insert the new stem cartridge into the housing. Ensure it is properly seated.
  3. Tighten New Bonnet Nut: Screw on the new bonnet nut and tighten it securely with pliers or an adjustable wrench. Do not overtighten.
  4. Check for Leaks (Initial): Turn on the water supply to the repaired side of the faucet. Check for any leaks around the bonnet nut, both above and below the countertop. If leaks occur, tighten the bonnet nut slightly more.
  5. Re-install Faucet Handle: Place the faucet handle back onto the stem and secure it with its screw.
  6. Repeat for Other Side (if applicable): If repairing both hot and cold sides, repeat steps 3-12 for the other valve.
  7. Re-install Aerator: Screw the aerator back onto the spout.
  8. Purge Air: Turn on both hot and cold water supplies completely and open the faucet handles for a few seconds to purge any air from the lines and restore proper water flow.

4. Operation

After successful installation, your faucet should operate smoothly. Turn the handle to control water flow and temperature. If the handle turns in the opposite direction than expected (e.g., turning clockwise for 'on' instead of 'off'), you may need to adjust the stem cartridge orientation. Refer to the Troubleshooting section for guidance.
