Safety Information

Please read and understand all safety precautions before operating the Corning PC-420D Stirring Hot Plate. Failure to follow these instructions may result in injury or damage to the equipment.

Setup

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove the hot plate from its packaging. Inspect the unit for any signs of damage during transit. Retain packaging for future storage or transport.
  2. Placement: Position the hot plate on a clean, stable, and level laboratory bench or work surface. Ensure there is sufficient clearance around the unit for ventilation and safe operation.
  3. Power Connection: Connect the three-prong power cord to a grounded 120V/60Hz electrical outlet. The unit is designed for U.S. power standards.
  4. Rod Mount Support: If using a support rod (sold separately), attach it to the built-in rod mount support on the rear of the unit.

Operating Instructions

The Corning PC-420D features intuitive controls for both heating and stirring functions.

Controls Overview:

Procedure:

  1. Power On: Ensure the unit is plugged in. The power indicator light will illuminate.
  2. Setting Stirring Speed: Place a stir bar into your vessel and position the vessel on the center of the Pyroceram top plate. Turn the "Stir" knob clockwise to the desired RPM. The digital display will show the set speed. Adjust as needed for proper mixing.
  3. Setting Temperature: Turn the "Heat" knob clockwise to the desired temperature in degrees Celsius. The digital display will show the set temperature and will blink until the set temperature is achieved. The temperature can be set in 5-degree C increments, ranging from 5°C to 550°C.
  4. Monitoring: Continuously monitor the process. The microprocessor-based control maintains consistent and repeatable temperature settings within ±2°C.
  5. Power Off: When finished, turn both the "Stir" and "Heat" knobs counter-clockwise to the "Off" position. Unplug the unit from the power source when not in use. Allow the hot plate to cool down completely before cleaning or moving. The "HOT TOP" indicator will remain lit until the surface temperature is below 60°C.
  6. External Temperature Control: The unit can be used with an external temperature controller and support rod (sold separately) for enhanced temperature precision. Refer to the external controller's manual for specific instructions.

Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Corning PC-420D Stirring Hot Plate.

Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your hot plate.

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Unit does not power on. No power to outlet; power cord not fully plugged in; unit malfunction. Check power outlet with another device. Ensure power cord is securely connected. If problem persists, contact customer support.
Temperature not reaching set point or fluctuating. Vessel too large for hot plate; insufficient power; external factors (drafts); unit malfunction. Ensure vessel size is appropriate. Minimize drafts. Verify power supply. If issue continues, contact customer support.
Stirrer not working or inconsistent. Stir bar not present or incorrect size; vessel not centered; liquid too viscous; unit malfunction. Ensure a suitable stir bar is in the vessel. Center the vessel on the plate. Reduce liquid viscosity if possible. Contact customer support if problem persists.
Digital display is blinking. Temperature has not yet reached the set point. This is normal operation. The blinking will stop once the set temperature is achieved.

For issues not listed here or if troubleshooting steps do not resolve the problem, please contact Corning customer support.
